A prominent regional group in Khliehriat has pressed the Meghalaya administration to provide definitive clarity regarding the proposed industrial initiative in the region. The Jaiñtia National Council has formally approached authorities demanding strict adherence to all regulatory frameworks concerning the Shree Cement project located at Lum Syrman.
The central executive body of the organization delivered official representations to the State Level Expert Appraisal Committee as well as the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority on Monday, emphasizing the need for absolute regulatory compliance.
Engaging With Regulatory Authorities
Briefing journalists, Jaiñtia National Council central executive committee president Sambormi Lyngdoh stated that the administration must operate transparently regarding the undertaking and await the findings of the state-constituted fact-finding committee before initiating any further measures.
As part of their outreach, council representatives also held discussions with State Environment Impact Assessment Authority chairman Annamalai to address the situation directly.
Clear Stance On Environmental Clearance
According to the organization, the chairman confirmed that the regulatory body has neither processed nor advanced any procedures concerning the proposal following the official announcement of the prevailing status quo.
Furthermore, officials assured the delegation that no environmental clearance would be issued while the restriction remains active, and no final determinations would be reached until the entire environmental review concludes.
Contradictory Information Raises Concerns
Despite these assurances, the council expressed apprehension over conflicting signals emanating from different official offices regarding the actual boundaries of the implemented freeze.
Delegates who met the joint secretary at the Chief Minister's Secretariat on the same day were reportedly informed that the restriction applied exclusively to physical ground operations rather than administrative paperwork.
The organization noted that this interpretation appeared to conflict directly with the position articulated by the environmental authority chairman regarding documentation work.
Call For Formal Notification
In light of these discrepancies, the council has strongly appealed to the state government to issue explicit directives across all administrative departments. They requested a formal public clarification addressed to the Hynñiewtrep community, particularly the inhabitants of the East Jaiñtia Hills district.
The group concluded by urging authorities to publish a definitive notification detailing the precise scope of the status quo and associated decisions to prevent any potential regulatory violations.
