Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the Shillong District Jail to welcome Khasi Students Union president Raymond Kharjana and general secretary Reuben Najiar following their release on bail. The gathering marked a significant moment for the student body as its top leaders walked free after weeks of detention.
Court Orders Lead to Release
The release came directly following the orders issued by the District and Sessions Court, East Khasi Hills. Upon walking out of confinement, KSU members assembled in large numbers at Motphran and organized a celebratory procession that marched all the way to the union office located in Jaiaw.
Background of the Arrest
Raymond Kharjana and Reuben Najiar were originally taken into custody on August 19. Their arrests were connected to the widespread violence that erupted across the area in the aftermath of a black-flag rally organized by the student organization.
Stance on Violence and Future Actions
Addressing supporters and reporters following his release, Reuben Najiar strongly denied any involvement of the union leadership in the outbreak of violence. He maintained with firmness that the KSU would continue relentlessly to pursue all the crucial issues it has raised for the public good.
Key Issues on the Agenda
Among the core matters the union intends to keep fighting for are concerns surrounding Shree Cement, administrative affairs at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, and much-needed recruitment reforms. Najiar added that the union would conduct its ongoing activities while strictly adhering to every condition imposed by the court in its bail order.
Ongoing Advocacy in Meghalaya
The return of the two prominent leaders coincides with the union's sustained engagement regarding employment opportunities, institutional accountability, and various other pressing matters affecting communities throughout Meghalaya.
