Authorities in Uttarakhand have rolled out an extensive traffic management plan to handle the massive surge of tourists and pilgrims heading toward Nainital and the renowned Kainchi Dham shrine of Neem Karoli Baba over the weekend. With thousands of travelers arriving from across the plains and hill districts to visit the lake city and offer prayers at the temple, local roads have come under heavy vehicular pressure. To prevent gridlock and ensure smooth movement for both commuters and local residents, district police have issued a comprehensive advisory outlining entry restrictions and alternate pathways.
Strict Restrictions in Effect From October 24 to 26
Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath TC confirmed that this specialized traffic framework remains fully active from October 24 through October 26. Under this blueprint, the administration has placed strict curbs on commercial transportation, set up designated staging grounds for private vehicles outside congested zones, and established a specialized shuttle link to ferry visitors directly to the temple. In addition, tight vehicular monitoring and detours have been introduced across key connecting arteries linking Bhowali, Bhimtal, and Mukteshwar.
Timings and Complete Restrictions on Heavy Vehicles and Taxis
To reduce severe bottlenecks on narrow mountain corridors, strict operating windows have been enforced for commercial transport. The passage of all heavy goods vehicles traveling toward Kainchi Dham remains completely banned between 3 AM and 11 AM. Law enforcement personnel deployed at border checkpoints will halt these heavy carriers at the district's outer boundaries during restricted hours. Furthermore, commercial taxis, regular two-wheelers, and yellow-plate commercial two-wheelers are entirely prohibited from entering the immediate vicinity of Kainchi Dham during this weekend period to keep the shrine zone accessible for pedestrians.
Designated Parking Hubs and Dedicated Shuttle Services
To streamline private passenger cars arriving for temple visits, the administration has established route-specific parking facilities linked with shuttle networks
- Traffic Arriving via Bhimtal: Private vehicles taking the Bhimtal approach must park at the Vikas Bhawan parking ground in Bhimtal. From there, devotees can board dedicated shuttle transport to reach Bhowali and continue onward to Kainchi Dham temple.
- Vehicles Moving via Jyolikote, Gethia, and Nainital: Mountain-bound private cars arriving along this stretch are being directed to the Bhowali Sanatorium parking facility. Dedicated local shuttles operate directly from this staging point to carry pilgrims to the shrine complex.
Detour Routes for Buses and Four-Wheelers Across Hill Districts
Long-distance commuters and passenger buses moving between the lower plains and higher Himalayan districts have been assigned alternate thoroughfares
- From Hills Down to the Plains: Traffic departing from Almora, Jageshwar, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh bound for the plains is routed via Lamgara, Dhanachuli, Dhari, and Khutani Band before proceeding through Bhimtal.
- From Plains Upward to Hill Stations: Vehicles originating from Haldwani, Kathgodam, and neighboring plain areas bound for Almora, Bageshwar, Jageshwar, and Pithoragarh must travel along the Khutani Band (Bhimtal), Dhari, and Dhanachuli Band corridor.
- Commuters Traveling to Ranikhet: Vehicles heading from Kathgodam to Ranikhet are diverted at Khutani Band and instructed to continue via the Mukteshwar-Ramgarh route.
Exemption and Dedicated Route for Local Residents
To prevent day-to-day hardship for regional residents amidst the surge of tourists, special travel provisions have been incorporated into the advisory. Residents of Bhimtal, Nainital, and Jyolikote who need to travel toward Khairna, Garampani, or Betalghat are exempt from the primary congested corridors. They are granted smooth, uninterrupted transit through the Dunikhal-Ratighat link road for their daily commute.
