National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya has preserved its standing among the country's top 100 engineering institutions by securing the 83rd rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025. Prof. Anup Dandapat, the Dean of Academic Affairs, shared the details while briefing media representatives at the institute's permanent campus located in Sohra. Over the past three and a half years, the institution has seen steady progress in research output, teaching standards, and industry linkages under Director Prof. Pinakeswar Mahanta, with development gaining clear momentum following the relocation to the Sohra campus two years ago.
Global Ranking Milestones
Beyond its recognition on the domestic front, the institution has secured mentions across multiple international higher education assessment tables. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the institute finds a place in the 1,200 to 1,400 band. Regionally, the THE Asia rankings place it in the 501 to 600 bracket, while the QS Asia University Rankings feature the institution in the 791 to 800 band.
Semiconductor Innovation and Faculty Research
The institute has actively participated in domestic technological advancement initiatives. Under the central government's Semicon India initiative, the institution has engineered two semiconductor chips utilizing domestic technology, while an additional 12 chips have been forwarded for commercial fabrication, according to Dandapat, who is a faculty member in Electrical Engineering.
A notable segment of the teaching faculty ranks within the top five percent of researchers globally when evaluated by research publications and academic citations. Several faculty members have also earned international academic honors, including Fulbright and Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) fellowships.
Internship Schemes, Placements, and Competitive Feats
Following academic reforms aligned with the National Education Policy, undergraduate BTech scholars are permitted to undertake extended industry internships once they finish their third year. This policy has enabled several students, including scholars from the local region, to secure international internship positions abroad. Placement records and offered remuneration packages have experienced noticeable gains since the initiative rolled out.
The institution's graduates have also excelled in nationwide technical evaluations. In the previous year's Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), an alumnus from the mechanical engineering branch earned an all-India rank of three.
Enrollment Trends, Industry Alignment, and New Courses
To cater to regional school education requirements, the institute has received clearance to introduce an integrated BSc-BEd degree starting from the 2027-28 academic session. During the most recent admission cycle, available seats across BTech, MSc, and MCA programmes were entirely filled, while MTech registrations achieved an intake of 75 to 80 percent, representing some of the highest enrollment ratios across regional technical institutions.
The institution also brought together directors, academic deans, and industrial delegates from technical institutes across the northeastern region to deliberate on adjusting postgraduate curricula to better reflect current workplace requirements and employment trends.
Financial Assistance and Scholar Support
Around 73 to 75 percent of the student body at the institution belongs to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Class backgrounds. To safeguard students from financial dropouts, substantial institutional aid has been set up. Approximately 200 enrolled students currently receive full scholarships backed by central and institute schemes.
Total tuition fee concessions have surpassed Rs 1 crore, and over Rs 6.5 crore is distributed annually as institutional fellowships to qualifying MTech and PhD research scholars. As Dandapat noted, the primary goal is ensuring education remains accessible so that financial hardships do not force any student to abandon their studies.
