Meghalaya demonstrated strong fiscal momentum in October, generating a 35 percent year-on-year increase in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections. Total revenue collected by the state climbed to Rs 216 crore during the month, up from Rs 160 crore recorded in the corresponding month of the previous year. This revenue acceleration positioned the state among the top three performers across the northeastern region.
Comparative Performance Across the Northeastern States
Official data released on Sunday placed Meghalaya in third position in terms of regional GST growth rates, following behind Assam and Manipur. Assam recorded the steepest increase across the Northeast at 47 percent, lifting its tax receipts from Rs 1,315 crore in October of the prior year to Rs 1,934 crore. Manipur secured the second spot with a 40 percent rise, pushing its total collection to Rs 90 crore compared with Rs 64 crore in the identical period last year.
Sharp 81 Percent Surge in State GST Receipts
The state's internal revenue stream registered an even sharper upward shift through its pre-settlement State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) collections. During October, Meghalaya's pre-settlement SGST grew by 81 percent, reaching Rs 84 crore. That represents a significant climb from the Rs 47 crore posted in October of the preceding year, underscoring notable improvement in domestic commercial receipts and tax compliance compared with previous benchmarks.
Sikkim Registers Solitary Contraction in the Region
While the broader northeastern territory experienced positive momentum in tax intake, trends diverged in the Himalayas. Official figures revealed that Sikkim stood out as the solitary state across the Northeast to record an annual contraction in its October GST collections.
