Election authorities in Shillong have marked significant progress under the Special Intensive Revision or SIR 2026 campaign for electoral rolls. Chief Electoral Officer Dr BDR Tiwari stated during a virtual review meeting that more than 82 percent of the related hearings have been successfully wrapped up across the state. The drive aims to clean up voter lists while safeguarding the democratic rights of every eligible citizen. The online review session brought together Deputy Commissioners cum District Election Officers, Electoral Registration Officers, and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers from all districts.
Notice Distribution and Hearing Progress
The current draft electoral roll features a total of 21,69,243 registered electors. Throughout the ongoing revision cycle, authorities have generated 6,51,735 notices so far. Out of these, 6,46,397 notices have been successfully delivered to the respective electors, while 5,190 remain pending for delivery. Officials have already concluded 5,36,468 hearings, which translates to 82.31 percent of the total notices issued. Following thorough scrutiny and adherence to official protocols, 542 electors have been declared ineligible so far.
Instructions to Clear Backlogs
During the virtual conference, the CEO instructed all district authorities to clear the remaining backlog in both notice deliveries and pending hearings without delay. He specifically stressed that any elector who fails to appear on their scheduled hearing date must be granted another fair opportunity to present their case. In addition to this administrative meeting, he also conducted the regular weekly review with representatives from recognized national and state political parties to maintain transparency.
Safeguarding Elector Rights
Reiterating the safety protocols built into the revision framework, the CEO clarified that receiving a notice does not automatically mean an elector's name will be deleted from the roll. He emphasized that no name can be removed without strictly following the prescribed legal procedure and giving the affected individual a chance to be heard. The review session also evaluated the status of various claims and objections filed by local citizens.
Application Statistics Across Categories
Across the state, election offices have received a combined total of 17,061 applications under different categories. This includes 9,343 Form 6 applications submitted for inclusion in the voter list, 1,076 Form 7 applications, 1,211 Form 8 applications filed for shifting residences, and 5,431 Form 8 applications seeking corrections in existing details. Local authorities are processing these requests according to the established guidelines.
