Concerns surrounding border security and unauthorized entry have resurfaced in Meghalaya following the interception of two young women suspected of crossing over unlawfully from Bangladesh. The incident occurred at Nongtrai in the East Khasi Hills district, where the duo was detained following suspicions regarding their travel documents and movement through a restricted zone. In the wake of the interception, the Hynniewtrep Youths Council has pressed law enforcement authorities for an exhaustive and transparent inquiry to ascertain the full facts behind their presence.
Interception in Restricted Border Area
The interception took place on September 26 after the Nongtrai unit of the council received actionable information regarding unusual movement across a restricted perimeter. Acting on the tip-off, monitors tracked the suspects down while they were commuting inside a vehicle registered under the number ML 05 AC 5971. The detained individuals were subsequently identified as 22-year-old Jhinuk Hijrani and 20-year-old Priyanka Kumari, before the matter was formally handed over to the local police apparatus for further legal processing.
Criminal Case Lodged Under the Passport Act
Official legal proceedings were initiated promptly at Mawsynram Police Station, where an official case was registered under Sections 12(1)(a) and 12(1)(c) of the Passport Act, 1967. Sub-Inspector Rochestar Warshong has been officially assigned to lead the investigation into the allegations. The assigned investigator is tasked with scrutinizing the legitimacy of their paperwork, verifying the exact timeline of their border transit, and recording statements regarding how they arrived in the locality.
