Shillong mourns the loss of Rebecca V. Suchiang, who served as Meghalaya's first indigenous woman Chief Secretary. She passed away on Tuesday at the age of 64 following a prolonged battle with cancer that lasted for more than two years.
Hospitalization and Final Moments
She had been receiving medical care at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences since Thursday. Despite ongoing treatments at the facility, she passed away at around 5 am on Tuesday morning.
Pioneering Bureaucratic Career
As a 1989-batch IAS officer belonging to the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Suchiang took office on September 30, 2021, breaking barriers as the state's first Khasi woman Chief Secretary. Beyond holding the highest bureaucratic office in the region as the first indigenous woman, she subsequently assumed the role of the state's first woman Chief Information Commissioner, further cementing her legacy in public administration.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed profound sorrow over her demise, highlighting her decisive leadership and unwavering dedication to public service. Writing on X, the Chief Minister recalled how she made bold decisions during challenging times, earning the deep respect of her peers and juniors alike for her exemplary work ethic. He also noted that she fought her illness with immense courage while continuing to work through her health challenges.
