Sanfida Nongrum Honoured As Meghalaya's Top Sports Achiever By Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma honoured footballer Sanfida Nongrum as the state's 'Achiever of the Month' in Sports on Tuesday, one of 47 athletes felicitated as the government highlighted its growing investment in sport.

Football captain Sanfida Nongrum picked up a fresh honour on Tuesday, when Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma named her the state's 'Achiever of the Month' in the Sports category at a ceremony held in Shillong, recognising her contribution to Indian football through the year. The event brought together some of the state's most accomplished sportspeople under one roof for a shared moment of recognition.

Forty-Seven Athletes Share The Stage

Nongrum was one of 47 sportspersons drawn from different disciplines who received the same honour during the programme. Addressing the gathering, Sangma explained that the monthly initiative exists to spotlight people who have made a mark in their respective fields and to motivate others through their example. In a post on X, Sangma wrote, "Through her talent, skill and hard work, Sanfida has carved a name for herself in Indian football," and credited her leadership with playing a part in a recent triumph for the national team.

Bigger Budgets And A New Sports Policy

Sangma used the occasion to underline the government's expanding commitment to sport, saying Meghalaya's budgetary allocation for the sector has risen substantially over recent years. He acknowledged that sports associations in the state had once struggled with limited government backing, but said many of those problems are now being tackled through fresh investment in sports infrastructure alongside direct assistance to associations, coaches and individual athletes. According to Sangma, that shift in funding is intended to close longstanding gaps in facilities and support systems that had held back athletes from smaller towns and rural pockets of the state. He described Meghalaya's Sports Policy as a "vision document" meant to steer the state towards its long-term sporting goals.

Investing In Meghalaya's Young Athletes

The Chief Minister tied this spending to youth development, saying that money channelled into sporting programmes should be viewed as an investment in the future of Meghalaya's young people. Congratulating all 47 achievers, he said sporting success is about far more than medals and public recognition, and urged them to let their own journeys inspire others. Sangma also spent time speaking directly with athletes, coaches and association representatives present at the event, fielding questions and suggestions on support for national and international competitions as well as incentives for athletes who win medals. Several of those present raised questions about travel costs and preparation support ahead of major tournaments, issues Sangma said the government was actively working to address.

While the rise in Meghalaya's sports budget and infrastructure investment is commendable, continuous monitoring is crucial to ensure that financial aid and travel grants reach athletes transparently and on time. This initiative will provide grassroots talent a clear pathway to mainstream success, provided administrative reforms and accountability within sports associations remain a priority.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma's push to enhance sports budgets and build rural infrastructure through the state's sports policy marks a crucial strategic step. However, ensuring transparency in sports administration and funding has historically remained a challenge in the region. The specific concerns raised by athletes regarding travel expenses and tournament preparation highlight that effective ground-level implementation will require stricter administrative accountability at the district level to ensure grassroots talent truly benefits.
