A senior Meghalaya Police officer sustained grave injuries in Shillong after a scooter carrying two individuals hit him in a bid to escape a security checkpoint. The incident took place in the early hours of Friday, around 1:30 AM on September 18, during a routine law and order patrol. Instead of complying with the police orders to stop for checking, the riders accelerated the two-wheeler directly towards the officer, resulting in a violent collision.
Evasion Attempt at Late-Night Checkpoint
According to an official statement from Dangsan Khyriem, the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (City), the police team had set up a security barricade near the Samkhamti Petrol Pump in the Urkaliar area. While conducting the naka checking, officers noticed a two-wheeler with two riders approaching the spot. When ordered to halt for a routine inspection, the riders defied the instructions and tried to aggressively speed past the checkpoint.
Additional SP Traffic Lovish Garg Injured
Observing the vehicle attempting to break the barrier, Lovish Garg, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) for East Khasi Hills, stepped forward to intervene and signaled the rider to stop. However, instead of applying brakes, the scooter rider accelerated and rammed straight into Garg. The impact caused severe injuries to the senior officer, who was immediately rushed to Woodland Hospital for urgent medical attention. Following initial emergency treatment, he was shifted to the hospital’s HD Unit for specialized monitoring and care.
Attempt to Murder Charges Filed
Senior police officials noted that the circumstances surrounding the collision suggest a deliberate act. The riders apparently intended to inflict grievous bodily harm on the officer in order to facilitate their escape from the checkpoint. Consequently, a criminal case has been registered against the suspects under charges of attempt to murder, initiating a comprehensive legal investigation.
Suspected Links to Student Union
The two accused individuals are suspected to be associated with the Khasi Students' Union (KSU), as per the official police statement. Authorities are currently investigating the precise reason behind their presence in the area at that late hour and what prompted them to take such extreme measures to bypass the police checkpoint. The investigation is exploring all angles to uncover the motives behind their actions.
Security Checks to Be Intensified
Following this grave incident, the police department has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public safety. Naka checking operations will continue unabated across the region to uphold law and order. The administration has urged citizens to cooperate with on-duty personnel and strictly follow lawful instructions.
