The rhythmic squeaks of non-marking shoes and the sharp cracks of smashes have filled the air in Shillong once again, marking the prestigious return of the North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship to Meghalaya after a decade-long absence. Running from September 16 to September 19, this high-octane four-day tournament has gathered more than 250 elite and rising badminton players from across the region’s eight states, transforming the state capital into a vibrant hub of sporting excellence. The grand sporting event is set to host intense matches over the coming days as teams lock horns for regional supremacy.
The Gateway to the 2027 National Games
Beyond the immediate glory of regional titles, the tournament carries massive long-term significance for the participating athletes. It is serving as the official qualifying tournament for the team events of the upcoming 39th National Games, which Meghalaya is slated to host in 2027. Shuttlers representing Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, and the host state Meghalaya have descended upon the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Sports Complex in Shillong, where the tournament was officially inaugurated on Wednesday. Organised by the Meghalaya State Badminton Association (MSBA) under the auspices of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), the championship promises high-stakes action as players battle for a spot on the national stage.
Meghalaya's Massive Financial Push for Sports
Inaugurating the sporting extravaganza, Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla emphasized how vital such regional platforms are for nurturing raw athletic talent and molding future champions. Highlighting the state's remarkable progress, Shylla revealed that Meghalaya’s sports budget has witnessed an astronomical jump, skyrocketing from around Rs 40 crore nearly nine years ago to an unprecedented Rs 844 crore today. This massive funding boost is being channeled directly into developing world-class infrastructure, creating competitive avenues, and offering lucrative incentives for local athletes.
Under the state's progressive policies, athletes who secure a gold medal at the National Games receive a reward of Rs 2 lakh. Furthermore, the innovative Meghalaya Outstanding Direct Appointment Policy guarantees secure government employment for state sportspersons who achieve podium finishes at major sports events. To ensure that academic and professional aspirations do not clash with sporting careers, this recruitment policy grants athletes a flexible window of up to 10 years to complete their higher education or continue competing professionally before officially joining their government desks. Additionally, the final state contingent selected for the upcoming National Games will receive dedicated training stipends, while sports-related injuries will be covered under special medical provisions of the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS).
Elite Shuttlers Inspire the Next Generation
The championship has also drawn some of the region's finest badminton stars, including India’s premier female shuttler Ashmita Chaliha, who is spearheading the challenge for Assam. Chaliha, celebrated as the first Indian badminton player to clinch the prestigious Korea Masters title, spoke warmly about the visible surge in grassroots talent across Northeast India. While acknowledging that structured coaching academies are successfully bringing young talent to the forefront, she noted that consistent exposure to high-level competition remains the critical bridge to transitioning to the international elite circuit. She advised the young competitors to focus on enjoying the game and giving their absolute best on court, rather than succumbing to the pressure of winning or losing.
Sharing her optimism, Mizoram's star player H. Lalthazuala expressed high confidence in his team’s prospects. Lalthazuala, who recently claimed the men's singles title at the Cameroon International 2026 and is a former U-17 national champion, lauded Meghalaya’s extensive preparations for the future National Games and shared his eager anticipation of returning to compete in the state next year.
A Grand Opening and Dignitaries in Attendance
The formal opening ceremony concluded with the official declaration of the games by Minister Shylla, followed by a solemn oath-taking ceremony led by the captain of the host Meghalaya badminton contingent. The ceremony was graced by several prominent sporting administrators, including the tournament committee convener of the Badminton Association of India, Omar Rashid. Other key attendees included senior officials from the Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Department, MSBA senior vice-president Dr. C. O. Rangad, general secretary Rajesh Kamal, and Assam Badminton Association treasurer Gautam Mahanta, alongside various regional sports administrators.
