Three suspected undocumented Bangladeshi nationals were intercepted on Sunday in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. Activists affiliated with the Jaintia Students' Union (JSU) Jowai Circle detained the trio at Lad Demithring after noticing suspicious movement, subsequently handing them over to authorities at the Jowai Police Station for a formal criminal investigation.
Vehicle Interception and Verification of Travel Papers
The three individuals were travelling inside a white Suzuki commercial tourist vehicle bearing the registration number ML 04 E 3485. Administrative records indicate that the vehicle is registered under the name of Treibor Kyndait, an individual from Shkenpyrsit. During an on-the-spot verification of identification and travel credentials, the three occupants reportedly admitted to JSU members that they were Bangladeshi nationals lacking regular legal entry permits, prompting their immediate detention.
Bribery Allegations and Lodging of the Police Complaint
Following their interception, the suspects were transferred directly to Jowai Police Station. The student organisation ensured that a formal First Information Report (FIR) was registered with law enforcement authorities. The union disclosed that while procedural steps were underway, operatives or middlemen associated with the illicit transit network approached their members. These brokers allegedly offered substantial financial kickbacks amounting to lakhs of rupees in cash to secure the quiet release of the three detained suspects. The union firmly declined the monetary inducements and insisted on formal legal proceedings.
Demands for a Thorough Crackdown on Infiltration Rings
The student leadership has urged local law enforcement to initiate an exhaustive and immediate investigation to dismantle the broader illicit network facilitating unlawful border crossings into the state. In an official communication released by Bocheru Mi Pohsnem, Education Secretary of the JSU Central Body and advisor to the Jowai Circle, the union affirmed that it would actively track the legal proceedings to ensure all syndicates aiding unauthorised migration face full statutory consequences.
