Vice President of India C P Radhakrishnan launched several crucial infrastructure and development initiatives during his inaugural official visit to the state of Meghalaya. The foundation laying ceremony took place at a public reception hosted at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong, marking the kickoff of projects centered on water supply, road connectivity, power infrastructure, and healthcare facilities. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, along with deputy chief ministers, cabinet ministers, and top government officials, attended the event.
Emphasizing Centre-State Partnership
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President stated that the new ventures would greatly boost Meghalaya’s progress and serve as a testament to the robust collaboration between the central government and the state administration. He underscored that collaborative governance between New Delhi and the state is essential for achieving balanced and inclusive growth. Furthermore, he noted that economic and infrastructural expansion must proceed hand in hand with the preservation of local ecology, culture, and ancient traditions.
Appreciating Local Culture and Warmth
Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the residents during his maiden official trip, the Vice President reaffirmed his backing for the state's continuous advancement. He praised Meghalaya for its scenic landscapes and vibrant community institutions. Highlighting the essence of secularism, he remarked that true secularism entails honoring not only diverse religious faiths but also respecting each other's viewpoints, traditions, and belief systems.
Chief Minister Outlines State Progress
Welcoming the dignitary, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed optimism that the visit would foster a lasting bond between the state leadership and the Vice President. Sangma pointed out that despite facing numerous hurdles over the past 54 years, traditional institutions and community systems have played a pivotal role in safeguarding the identity and culture of the local population. Highlighting recent government initiatives, he noted that the regional economy is currently among the fastest-growing in the nation.
Referring to details shared by Conrad Sangma in a post on X, the Chief Minister reiterated that the administration's primary objective extends beyond mere financial expansion to ensuring tangible benefits for youth, farmers, entrepreneurs, and students.
Overview of Projects Worth Over Rs 1,010 Crore
The dignitaries laid foundation stones for six major infrastructure works valued at over Rs 1,010 crore collectively. These specific initiatives include
- New Shillong Water Supply Scheme, Phase II (Part A), valued at Rs 850.58 crore, supported through the Urban Challenge Fund managed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
- A 110-metre major bridge over the Umngot river along the Jongksha-Kharang-Dienglieng-Nongjrong-Moodymmai-Wahiajer road, costing Rs 21.86 crore under NESIDS funding.
- A 13.50 km roadway stretching from Umsen to Barapathar via Pilangku-A, Jyrmang, Chibra, and Mawiong, built at Rs 56.01 crore under NESIDS.
- A 30-bedded AYUSH facility at the Shillong Civil Hospital funded with Rs 10 crore by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs under Article 275(1).
- A 2x50 MVA, 132/33 kV substation located at Mawkhanu, accompanied by a 132 kV D/C Saisiej-Mawkhanu transmission line and a GIS bay at Saisiej, costing Rs 72 crore under PM-DevINE.
Cultural performances featuring indigenous songs and dances added vibrance to the public reception. The Chief Minister also invited the Vice President to explore other scenic and cultural landmarks across the region.
