The political environment in Shillong has intensified following a sharp exchange between different factions over the state of the education department. Voice of the People Party (VPP) chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has launched a scathing attack on Aristotle Rymbai, the president of the Meghalaya SSA Schools Association. This verbal duel erupted after Rymbai publicly opposed the VPP’s demand for the ouster of Vijay Kumar Mantri, the Education Commissioner and Secretary of Meghalaya. Basaiawmoit questioned Rymbai's political impartiality, suggesting that his opposition is motivated by partisan affiliations rather than the welfare of teachers.
VPP Chief Points to Photographic Evidence of Political Bias
To back his allegations, the VPP leader highlighted a photograph circulating on social media platforms. The image reportedly shows the SSA teachers' union leader holding up the election symbol of the ruling National People's Party (NPP) — the "book" — during a political gathering. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong was also present at the same meeting. Basaiawmoit expressed his disappointment over this, stating that representatives should not hesitate to speak the truth when they are affiliated with a political party. He emphasized that educators and their leaders must maintain strict political neutrality, particularly when discussing critical matters related to the state's education system.
Justification of the Demand to Remove Vijay Kumar Mantri
Defending his party's stance against the senior bureaucrat, Basaiawmoit clarified that the call for Mantri's removal does not stem from any personal animosity or individual differences. Instead, the demand is based on the VPP’s objective evaluation of the Education Department’s performance under his administration. He alleged that the functioning of the department under Mantri's leadership has created significant confusion and operational difficulties within the sector. According to Basaiawmoit, seeking the commissioner’s removal is a constructive critique of the department's shortcomings rather than a direct, politically motivated assault on the state government.
The VPP's Position on the Structure Pay Framework
The VPP chief also used the opportunity to clarify where his party stands regarding the government’s newly proposed Structure Pay Framework (SPF) for recruiting and compensating teachers. He made it clear that the VPP is not fundamentally opposed to the introduction of the SPF. However, he insisted that any new recruitment system must ensure that teachers receive adequate and sustainable salaries. Basaiawmoit raised concerns about the future of educators, asking what would happen to those who join the service two years after its implementation. He argued that the system must guarantee stable and proper compensation for all teachers.
A Stern Warning Regarding Future Salary Increments
Concluding his remarks, Basaiawmoit asserted that the disagreement with the SSA leadership would not change the VPP's political path. However, he delivered a strong warning to the association. He stated that if the SSA president’s defense of the administration implies that the teachers are satisfied with their current pay, the VPP would take note of this stance. Should the VPP come to power in the future, it will not prioritize upgrading their salaries to match those of government school teachers or deficit school teachers. This statement has significantly elevated the stakes in the ongoing debate between the political party and the teachers' association.
