Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that Meghalaya is confronting a high and steadily growing HIV/AIDS burden, prompting the launch of a dedicated five-year mission with an initial allocation of Rs 25 crore. He delivered this announcement while addressing the State Level Red Ribbon Youth Festival 2026 and Samman Samaroh Award Ceremony, which was hosted by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong.
Addressing Climbing Infection Numbers
Warning that annual infection figures continue to rise, Sangma cautioned that handling the situation would become significantly harder if preventative measures are delayed further. He stressed that tackling the epidemic requires more than just administrative efforts from the health department or the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society. According to Conrad K Sangma on X, active participation and shared responsibility from every citizen are vital to containing the spread before it deteriorates.
Framework and Administrative Approach
The newly launched mission aligns directly with the UNAIDS 95-95-95 framework, focusing on identifying positive cases promptly, supplying antiviral medications, and ensuring viral suppression across the board. The state administration is adopting an all-of-government approach, integrating every branch of the government machinery into the effort. Additionally, ongoing strategies are being continuously refined to address interconnected drug abuse issues and streamline access to comfortable medication systems.
Eradicating Stigma and Empowering Youth
A primary pillar of the mission is breaking down the social stigma surrounding both HIV and drug addiction, ensuring individuals feel safe to undergo testing and seek medical guidance without hesitation. Sangma described young people as the most crucial stakeholders in the state, noting that the initiative seeks to guide them through peer pressure and equip them to make informed personal safety choices.
Recognizing Excellence and Community Efforts
The ceremony featured awards recognizing organizations and districts for exceptional contributions to public health. South Garo Hills was honored with the Surakshit District Award. Ialong CHC was recognized as the Best Performing ART Centre for its dedicated care delivery to people living with HIV, while the Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association in West Jaintia Hills received the award for Best Performing TI. Winners of various festival competitions were also awarded by the Chief Minister.
