Higher education infrastructure in Mizoram received a major boost on Friday as Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated multiple developmental facilities worth Rs 5 crore at Government Champhai College. Executed under the centrally sponsored Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, commonly known as PM-USHA, the comprehensive package aims to upgrade academic resources, physical campus amenities, and technical equipment at the institution.
Budget Allocation and Completed Facilities
The total financial allocation of Rs 5 crore was distributed across several key construction and modernization components. The largest outlay was dedicated to a new classroom building, constructed at an expenditure of Rs 3.70 crore to expand academic capacity. For athletic and cultural pursuits, Rs 40 lakh was utilized to renovate the existing multipurpose hall, while another Rs 40 lakh funded the construction of a dedicated semi-running track.
An additional Rs 50 lakh allocation was channeled into green energy, technology, and skill-building initiatives. This fund supported the installation of an on-campus solar power plant, the procurement of information technology, laboratory, and solar equipment, as well as the organization of academic workshops, vocational skills training, and student personality development programmes. Government Champhai College is one of just two higher education institutions across Mizoram selected under the initial phase of the PM-USHA initiative. Construction commenced on February 12, 2025, and reached completion within the designated timeframe in July 2026. The official inauguration was held alongside the valedictory session of College Week 2026.
Personal Nostalgia and Future University Campus Prospects
While addressing the faculty and students, Lalduhoma reflected on his personal ties to the college, sharing that he was part of its inaugural student batch. He recounted attending evening classes and studying under the light of traditional oil lamps during the institution's formative years. Expressing pride in the college's subsequent transformation, he noted that it now stands as an established multidisciplinary government institution offering a broad spectrum of academic disciplines.
Highlighting the substantial physical footprint of the campus, the Chief Minister remarked that the institution holds strong potential to evolve into a full-fledged university campus once Mizoram State University becomes completely functional. Furthering his institutional commitments, he announced that an additional sanction of Rs 50 lakh had recently been granted for expanding the college hostel, alongside assurances of government backing for the construction of a retaining wall and an official parade ground.
Faculty Strengthening and Regional District Projects
Detailing steps taken to enhance teaching capacity, Lalduhoma stated that four Assistant Professors were appointed under RUSA, alongside four additional faculty members recruited for the Bachelor of Computer Applications programme. Three contractual teachers have also been brought on board, while formal orders have been finalized to regularize existing faculty members under the relevant administrative arrangement. These academic reinforcements align directly with the targets set under the National Education Policy 2020.
The Chief Minister also reviewed ongoing infrastructure work across Champhai district, drawing attention to a Working Women's Hostel being established at Tlangrawt, facility modernization at the District Jail, extensive road widening projects, and the development of the New Champhai Sports Complex. Government Champhai College currently caters to 589 enrolled students, supported by an operational staff comprising 32 regular faculty members, five contractual instructors, 19 casual workers, one part-time employee, and 15 non-teaching staff members.
