Educational infrastructure in Mizoram is set for a major expansion as the state government actively works to bring Mizoram State University into operation by the year 2028. State Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Vanlalthlana, shared these updates during a recent official briefing, highlighting that key administrative appointments, site preparation, and faculty recruitment drives are already making steady headway across the region.
Leadership Appointments and Recruitment Drive
To establish a functional administration for Mizoram State University, the state government launched the selection procedure for top executive positions, including the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar. Although an initial search committee was formed, the process faced a brief delay when one of the nominated members decided to withdraw from the panel. Consequently, authorities established a fresh search committee to oversee the selection of candidates for both premier roles.
Alongside executive leadership, human resource planning for the new university is progressing in phases. The government has formally sanctioned a total of 71 posts to support the institution's initial setup. Out of these created positions, official clearance has been granted to recruit for 21 posts in the immediate phase. Several appointments have already been finalized, while recruitment for the remaining sanctioned spots remains actively underway.
Relocation of Campus to Lunglei
The establishment of Mizoram State University has undergone strategic changes regarding its physical location. Legislative approval for the institute was first granted when the Mizoram State University Bill was passed by the state legislative assembly on March 4, 2025, with the state capital, Aizawl, initially designated as the host city. However, administrative evaluations and regional development goals later prompted state leadership to shift the planned university campus to Lunglei.
Following this strategic decision, an amended bill was presented and passed in the state assembly session in February this year to formally sanction Lunglei as the university site. To ensure operations begin smoothly prior to permanent campus construction, government officials are currently identifying a suitable rented building within Lunglei. Once appropriate premises are secured and leased, operational activities for the university will be fast-tracked.
Expansion of Technical and Professional Education
Parallel to the university initiative, the state government is pursuing a broader upgrade of technical education infrastructure in the region. Mizoram Engineering College, situated at Pukpui within Lunglei district, has received formal approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to introduce undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering and Computer Science Engineering. Each of these two branches will maintain an annual capacity of 30 students.
Constructed with an investment of approximately Rs 26 crore, the engineering college is scheduled to welcome its inaugural cohort during the 2027-28 academic session. Concurrently, progress is being made on the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Lengpui campus project, where the state government has successfully secured required funding dedicated to forest clearance procedures. Furthermore, Mizoram has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central Government under the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) project, aiming to systematically modernize institutional capabilities and technical learning resources across the state.
