Cross-border commerce along Mizoram's frontiers requires a forward-looking, consolidated operational framework to ensure economic fluidity while keeping unlawful trade in check. Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh has called for structured long-term planning, urging administrative bodies to establish regulated trading mechanisms and maintain proactive inter-departmental synergy.
High-Level Review at Lok Bhavan
These directives emerged during a strategic meeting convened on Thursday at Lok Bhavan with senior officials representing the Commerce & Industries Department alongside the Home Department. The session focused on the administrative preparedness required to support expanding economic channels while fortifying border management systems against unauthorized commercial flows.
Synchronizing Groundwork with Connectivity Projects
Touching upon upcoming connectivity ventures, including highway improvements and railway link extensions towards the frontier, the Governor cautioned against waiting for physical infrastructure to reach final completion. He advised administrative authorities to utilize the present preparatory phase to conclude all necessary groundwork in advance. Establishing operational rules, regulatory protocols, and logistic clearance channels ahead of project handovers would prevent administrative logjams and enable smooth trade transit as soon as transit corridors become operational.
Upgrading Infrastructure and Formalising Border Haats
The review thoroughly evaluated operational hurdles and structural progress across key trade nodes, covering Border Haats, Land Customs Stations, Integrated Check Posts, and Land Ports. The participants discussed concrete steps to formalise the Border Haat arrangement, bringing unregulated exchanges under legitimate surveillance and structured commercial procedures. Governor Singh underlined that a single, unified plan incorporating all trade-related actions is vital for sustainable cross-border exchanges, promising administrative support for these developmental steps.
Fast-Tracking Proposals via Joint Working Group
To eliminate procedural bottlenecks, the Governor instructed the Joint Working Group to formulate detailed blueprints and comprehensive project proposals without delay. Submitting these reports promptly to relevant higher authorities will help avoid project implementation lags. The high-level meeting saw the participation of Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor Vinod P. Kavle, Commerce & Industries Department Secretary Dr. H. Lianzela, Home Department Secretary Mr. Vanlalmawia, alongside other senior administrative figures.
