In recognition of their standout performance in India's gold-winning campaign at the Asian Games, the Mizoram government has announced a cash reward of Rs 40 lakh each for hockey stars Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi. The two athletes received a grand reception upon their return to Aizawl from the continental championship, marking a celebratory milestone for the entire state and acknowledging their contribution to Indian sports on the global stage.
Grand Reception at R Dengthuama Hall in Aizawl
A formal felicitation ceremony took place at R Dengthuama Hall in Mualpui Salem, where Chief Minister Lalduhoma honoured both hockey players. Speaking at the gathering, the Chief Minister commended their exceptional role in Indian hockey and their determination to excel at the highest level of international competition. He noted that their accomplishment represents an inspiring blueprint for upcoming athletes across Mizoram who aspire to represent India.
Reward Breakdown Across Two Government Schemes
The financial incentive of Rs 40 lakh per athlete combines support from two administrative initiatives. Under the Mizoram State Incentive Cash Award Scheme, each player will receive Rs 25 lakh. An additional Rs 15 lakh each will be disbursed through the Bana Kaih (Handholding) scheme, taking the aggregate reward to Rs 40 lakh per player. Lalduhoma explained that the awards would be officially presented alongside incentives for other accomplished Mizo athletes during the upcoming fifth distribution ceremony for incentive cash awards.
First Asian Games Medallists in the History of Mizoram
Highlighting the historical significance of the win, Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized that Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi have etched their names in the record books by becoming the first athletes from Mizoram ever to win medals at the Asian Games. The fact that the state began its continental medal tally directly with gold serves as a moment of immense regional pride. Lalduhoma pointed out that this milestone underscores Mizoram's capability to evolve into a major hockey hub, provided young athletes receive dedicated coaching, modern sports infrastructure, and continuous institutional backing.
Focus on Grassroots Hockey and Venue Renaming
Due to India's prominent international standing in the discipline, hockey has been classified as a priority sport under the Bana Kaih 'Empowering Mizoram Sports' initiative. To honour the achievements of Lalremsiami, the state administration is currently assessing a proposal to name the Kolasib Diakkawn GSA playground after her. Meanwhile, Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar described the victory as a monumental achievement for the nation, emphasizing that India's triumph in women's hockey at the Asian Games arrived after a 44-year wait since its previous gold in the sport. Hmar congratulated both players and extended his best wishes for their future sporting endeavours.
