Debt-burdened telecom operator Vodafone Idea Ltd has returned to the spotlight as it searches for massive new capital to expand its mobile network and regain market competitiveness. In a major development for the country's third-largest wireless provider, a consortium of financial institutions led by State Bank of India (SBI) is reportedly evaluating a comprehensive funding proposal worth approximately Rs 35,000 crore. The news generated fresh trading momentum in Vodafone Idea shares on Friday, September 11, as market participants weighed the financial lifelines against ongoing operational hurdles.
Details of the Rs 35,000 Crore Financing Package
The proposed credit package under review has been structured to address both direct borrowing needs and trade facilitation requirements. According to reports, the request comprises roughly Rs 25,000 crore in funded credit facilities, alongside an additional Rs 10,000 crore in non-funded credit lines. Funded facilities typically involve direct cash disbursements, such as term loans or working capital limits, whereas non-funded facilities encompass instruments such as bank guarantees and letters of credit.
These non-funded lines are critical for Vodafone Idea to satisfy network vendor commitments and keep ongoing operations functioning smoothly. The capital injection is intended to accelerate the expansion of its 4G footprint and support the broader rollout of 5G infrastructure, allowing the operator to better defend its market share against market leaders Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.
Share Price Action and Intraday Movements
Following the emergence of the funding reports, Vodafone Idea's stock witnessed modest gains during Friday's trading session. Around 11:21 am, the shares were trading at Rs 14.98, marking an increase of Rs 0.08 or 0.54% from the previous close. The equity opened the session at Rs 15.08 and fluctuated within a narrow band, touching an intraday high of Rs 15.20 and a low of Rs 14.84.
Market participants view the proposed funding package as a potential catalyst that could improve Vodafone Idea's operational liquidity. If approved, the additional bank leverage will allow the company to upgrade its network quality and reduce subscriber churn, addressing core operational weaknesses that have weighed on its financial metrics in recent quarters.
Lender Due Diligence and Government Backing
Despite the positive market reaction, the proposal remains strictly in the evaluation stage. Participating banks within the SBI-led consortium are reviewing several key parameters before granting final sanctions, including existing group credit exposure, revenue projections, repayment capacity, and internal risk metrics. Bankers are reportedly seeking robust cash flow safeguards and stringent security structures to hedge against historical sector volatility and the company's sizeable outstanding obligations.
The central government's status as the single largest shareholder in Vodafone Idea, following the conversion of statutory dues into equity, offers a measure of baseline confidence to institutional lenders. However, commercial banks are emphasizing that loan approvals must strictly hinge on the operational viability and underlying cash generation capabilities of the business.
Jefferies Initiates Coverage With Rs 20 Target Price
Adding to the sentiment, global brokerage house Jefferies initiated coverage on Vodafone Idea on September 10, categorizing the stock as a 'high-beta turnaround opportunity'. Jefferies set a price target of Rs 20 per share, representing one of the most bullish valuations currently assigned to the stock by sell-side analysts.
The brokerage firm noted that securing approximately Rs 25,000 crore through debt channels would adequately cover the company's capital expenditure requirements for the next few years. Nonetheless, Jefferies highlighted that a secondary round of equity dilution or strategic investment might still be required down the road to ensure long-term balance sheet stability.
