A tragic incident in Nagaland's Tuensang district has claimed the lives of at least nine individuals over the last three days due to the suspected consumption of adulterated or spurious alcohol. Among the deceased are three members belonging to a single family. In response to these sudden fatalities, the state police department has issued an urgent red alert, strongly cautioning citizens against buying or drinking alcoholic beverages from unverified or illegal sources.
Details on Deaths and Severe Symptoms
According to details shared online by Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma on September 12, two of these tragic deaths occurred at the Civil Hospital in Tuensang. Before passing away, the affected individuals exhibited a range of severe symptoms. Police authorities disclosed that the victims suffered from intense breathing difficulties, blurred vision, excruciating headaches, dizziness, nausea, and persistent vomiting after they consumed the suspect beverage. Although the definitive medical cause of these deaths is still being investigated, initial inquiries strongly suggest a direct connection, as most of the individuals had consumed alcohol shortly before falling critically ill.
Investigation and Forensic Action
To pinpoint the exact chemical composition of the beverage and confirm what triggered the fatal reactions, authorities have initiated comprehensive scientific and forensic examinations on the seized liquids. Police representatives emphasized that the victims' primary complaint of severe breathlessness immediately followed the consumption of the suspected toxic alcohol. A major hurdle in the initial stages of the investigation was the lack of post-mortem examinations. In most of these cases, the families had already taken the bodies of their loved ones for funeral rites before the law enforcement agencies could identify the alarming pattern of consecutive deaths. The Tuensang Police are actively investigating to trace the original source of the liquor and determine the parties responsible for its production, sale, and local distribution.
Police Advisories and Regional Warnings
In light of the escalating crisis, DGP Rupin Sharma issued a direct advisory urging the public to completely abstain from consuming alcohol. He specifically highlighted several vulnerable districts where caution is paramount, including Mon, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Shamator, and Noklak. Additionally, the state's top police official made a broader appeal to residents in all other districts across Nagaland, advising them to refrain from drinking alcohol until the ongoing investigation brings complete clarity to the situation.
Raids and Law Enforcement Crackdown
Concurrently, the Tuensang Police have mobilized active search teams to identify the supply chain of the toxic substance. To curb further distribution, extensive police search and raid operations were launched in Tuensang Town as well as the nearby Chendang Saddle area. These targeted operations led to the confiscation of approximately 470 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) alongside multiple beer cans from various illicit spots. Law enforcement is coordinating closely with the state's Excise department and other regulatory bodies to enforce immediate safety measures, while also appealing to the local community to report any suspicious manufacturing or sale of unauthorized alcohol in their neighborhoods.
