A major political shift has unfolded within student politics in Kerala as the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad swept the student union elections at the Government Sanskrit College in Tripunithura. Winning every contested post, the student organization brought an end to approximately 45 years of continuous dominance held by the Students' Federation of India. Coming on the heels of its performance in the Delhi University Students' Union elections, this outcome marks a significant breakthrough for the organization within a traditional Left bastion.
Sweeping All Key Posts in Tripunithura
The student union elections concluded with ABVP winning all six major posts in the college, unseating SFI from an administration it had steered for more than four decades. This campus verdict aligns with broader political developments in the surrounding area. Recently, the BJP assumed control of the Tripunithura Municipality, dislodging four and a half decades of continuous Left leadership in the local civic body. The student body election results mirror that municipal turnover, establishing a new administrative presence within the college union.
Breakdown of Newly Elected Union Representatives
The newly elected office bearers represent a clean victory across both executive positions and departmental representations within the institution
- Chairperson and Vice Chairperson: Snigdha M Hari secured election as Chairperson of the college union, while Adithya TA claimed the post of Vice Chairperson.
- General Secretary and Magazine Editor: Vignesh Bhatt won the position of General Secretary, and Vignesh D was elected Magazine Editor.
- Arts Club Secretary and Union Councillor: Anjali T emerged victorious as Arts Club Secretary, while Nivedya KN was elected as the University Union Councillor.
- Class Representatives: For academic representation, Shivani R was elected Second UG Representative, while Avani CB won the post of Second PG Representative.
Union Priorities and Campus Outlook
Following the outcome, ABVP characterized the victory as a student repudiation of policies pursued by SFI. A representative of the organization stated that previous SFI-led student unions failed to undertake adequate measures to support and advance Sanskrit studies within the college. The representative also noted that dismantling this four-decade-long stronghold will energize and strengthen ABVP units across various other collegiate campuses throughout Kerala in the coming academic sessions.
