Air travelers heading to Ahmedabad are set to experience seamless road transit similar to the dedicated access systems at international airports in Delhi and Mumbai. A comprehensive elevated corridor has been proposed for the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) in Ahmedabad, aimed at offering completely separated entry and exit routes for airport-bound traffic to bypass regular urban bottlenecks.
Dedicated Road Network to Bypass Urban Bottlenecks
Navigating through the heavy city traffic at Ummed Circle while entering the airport premises has long been a major challenge for passengers. To eliminate this congestion, authorities have formulated a proposal to build an elevated corridor extending from Indira Bridge Circle to Flag Circle. While final administrative approvals are currently awaited, the proposed corridor is designed to completely separate vehicles traveling to the terminals from the congested daily traffic on Airport Road. The airport operator has prepared a comprehensive road network master plan, followed by multiple rounds of preliminary coordination meetings with civic body officials.
Three Distinct Phases of the Elevated Route
The proposed elevated corridor has been structured into three clear segments to optimize engineering and connectivity. The first phase will sit entirely within the operational boundary of the airport terminal area. The second phase will connect Flag Circle directly to Indira Bridge Circle. The third section is currently being finalized and is anticipated to include two new bridges across the Sabarmati River alongside connecting ramps reaching toward Indira Circle in the direction of Gandhinagar.
Resolving Severe Congestion on Existing Commuter Corridors
Under the existing road layout, the stretch emerging from Airport Circle bears an enormous volume of traffic. Vehicles moving between Gandhinagar, Hansol, and Shahibaug merge directly onto this single thoroughfare from both directions. In addition to local commuter movement, the regular stream of flight passengers adds heavy continuous volume. Because transit commuters and airport-bound travelers currently share the exact same road surface, delays and bottlenecks have become routine. Estimates show that at least 14,000 cars enter and exit the SVPI airport premises each day. The diversion of airport traffic onto an elevated deck will significantly reduce vehicular pressure on local surface roads.
Inclusion of Defense Land and Integrated Cargo Logistics
To execute the planned alignment, authorities are examining the inclusion of land parcels under the Ministry of Defence. Civic authorities from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation alongside airport management had begun feasibility assessments back in October 2025 to evaluate elevated routes and alternative access roads to de-congest the area. That initiative has now expanded into an overarching road network program that also integrates direct connections toward the airport cargo logistics center and Indira Circle. Once operational, travel times to the airport will drop drastically, ensuring a smoother journey for air passengers while keeping broader urban traffic running without interruption.
