A major organizational shift has unfolded within the Bahujan Samaj Party as party chief Mayawati entrusted a premier national responsibility to her younger nephew, Ishan Anand. During a high-level conclave of party office-bearers in Lucknow, Ishan Anand was formally designated as the National Coordinator of the party. The move follows the removal of his elder brother, Akash Anand, who previously held the mantle before falling out of favor with the leadership. Mayawati formally extended her blessings to Ishan Anand during the gathering as he took on the central leadership post.
Blessings and Formal Address at the Lucknow Gathering
The strategic meeting in Lucknow brought together key party functionaries from across the nation to chart the organization's future path. In contrast to the long-standing tradition where Mayawati remains the sole speaker addressing BSP conferences, this session witnessed an unusual break from convention as Ishan Anand was permitted to speak right after the party supremo.
Before taking the floor, Ishan Anand touched Mayawati's feet to seek her blessings and conveyed his heartfelt gratitude for trusting him with the role of National Coordinator. Addressing the assembled delegates, he pledged to strictly follow the principles and directions established by the leadership, assuring everyone that he would never let them down.
Independent Electoral Stance in Three Key States
Alongside the internal leadership restructuring, Mayawati laid down the electoral roadmap for key state contests. The party resolved to contest the upcoming legislative assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab completely independently. Rejecting any prospective tie-ups, the leadership emphasized that the party will maintain strict distance from coalitions and rely entirely on its dedicated cadre and core ideological footing in these battlegrounds.
Family Succession Limits and the Rift with Akash Anand
Mayawati reaffirmed her clear stance regarding internal family involvement, stating that Ishan Anand will be the sole member from the family promoted within the party ranks. In contrast, Akash Anand and his sister have been explicitly kept away from all organizational responsibilities and decision-making roles. Explaining the background, Mayawati recalled that she had originally introduced Akash Anand into active politics upon the earnest request of her younger brother, Anand Kumar.
However, citing Akash's shifting conduct and activities following his marriage, Mayawati noted that the party was forced to sever ties with him. She pointed out that Akash had come under the undue influence of his father-in-law, Ashok Siddharth, asserting that reinstating him under such conditions would amount to a betrayal of the party's core foundation.
Strict Accountability and Future Terms
The BSP supremo highlighted that extensive consultations led to the determination that another member from Anand Kumar's household should be brought forward, provided they do not repeat Akash's missteps. This deliberate assessment paved the way for Ishan Anand to be elevated with dignity into the national role. At the same time, Mayawati left no ambiguity regarding organizational discipline, cautioning that if Ishan engages in serious anti-party actions in the future, he too will face immediate expulsion from the party without exception.
