A cloud cover over Bengaluru on Friday, 6 November, threatens to disrupt peak Dhanteras festivities as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls across South Interior Karnataka for today and tomorrow, 7 November. The timing of the rainfall comes at a challenging hour when shoppers throng jewellery stores, traditional markets, and temples across the city. Unscheduled downpours during these peak evening hours could quickly slow vehicular movement to a crawl across major arterial roads.
IMD Alert and Regional Weather Forecast
According to the latest bulletin issued by the IMD, the warning for South Interior Karnataka remains active through Friday and Saturday, after which conditions are expected to normalize with no warnings in place from Sunday, 8 November, through Thursday, 12 November. Adding details to the regional outlook, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) indicated that rain across the South Interior, Coastal, and Malnad belts will likely remain scattered to moderate, accompanied by strong winds. Isolated pockets may experience heavy precipitation, while early mornings are slated to stay cold and foggy across several parts of the state.
Cyclonic Influence and City Weather Profile
The primary atmospheric driver behind this spell is Cyclone Murasu, which has gradually weakened near the Bay of Bengal. The IMD had previously projected intermittent light-to-moderate showers extending from 6 November to 10 November. For Bengaluru specifically, the localized precipitation probability stands at approximately 50 percent for Friday, with daytime temperatures hovering around a maximum of 26°C and dipping to a low of 20°C. Meteorologists note that while the showers may be short-lived and patchy rather than widespread across every neighborhood, sudden gusty winds and severe lightning could strike with minimal advance notice.
Traffic Bottlenecks and Known Waterlogging Points
Commuters face the heaviest disruption during evening peak hours when festival traffic merges with daily office rush hours. Rain spells typically cripple key routes, with slow-moving traffic reported along Sankey Road, Guttahalli Main Road, JC Nagar Main Road, and the inbound traffic corridor from Hebbal. Furthermore, persistent showers have already led to significant waterlogging on both sides of the Marathahalli bridge, as well as along stretches in Kaikondahalli and Iblur heading toward Bellandur, requiring extra caution from drivers.
Clearer Skies for Diwali and Cooler Nights Ahead
Residents can look forward to weather relief just in time for the weekend. The chance of precipitation drops sharply to about 15 percent on both Saturday and Sunday, paving the way for mostly dry conditions. This implies that Diwali celebrations on Sunday, 8 November, should proceed under clear skies. Following the festival, night temperatures will register a steady decline, with minimum readings falling to near 19°C by Monday, 9 November, and dropping further to around 18°C by Tuesday, 10 November.
