This destructive pest shelters inside the central whorl of the maize plant and consumes newly emerging tender leaves. If left undetected in the initial stages, the pest can spread rapidly across the entire field, leading to severe yield reductions. Consequently, agricultural experts strongly advise farmers to perform regular field inspections and adopt prompt control protocols upon noticing any early signs of infestation.
Identifying Fall Armyworm Infestation Symptoms
The larvae of the Fall Armyworm typically seek shelter inside the central whorl of the maize plant, where they begin feeding on young leaves. As these leaves unfurl and grow, a distinct pattern of small and large holes arranged in a straight line becomes visible. This unique hole pattern serves as a primary diagnostic indicator of the pest's presence. Additionally, wet frass or larval excrement can often be found accumulated inside the whorl. If prompt remedial action is not taken, the caterpillars gradually extend their damage to other parts of the plant. To prevent catastrophic losses, farmers should conduct thorough field scouting at least once a week, explicitly examining the whorls of individual plants.
Recommended Chemical Controls and Dosages
Providing guidance on managing this agricultural threat, agricultural expert Pramod Kumar recommended the application of Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG as an effective chemical treatment against Fall Armyworm. The recommended concentration is approximately 1 gram of the product mixed into 2.5 liters of water. Covering a single acre of maize crop typically requires around 200 liters of this prepared spray solution.
Besides Emamectin Benzoate, alternative chemical solutions include Chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC and Spinetoram 11.7% SC. Both of these formulations offer strong efficacy in controlling larval populations when applied correctly.
Optimal Spraying Techniques and Timing
Because Fall Armyworm larvae remain concealed deep within the plant whorl, targeted application is essential. Farmers must ensure that the spray nozzle is directed directly into the whorl so the chemical solution makes direct contact with the hidden larvae. Performing sprays either early in the morning or late in the evening yields the best results. During these cooler hours, the larvae are actively feeding, making them significantly more vulnerable to the applied insecticide.
Long-term Pest Management and Resistance Avoidance
Relying exclusively on chemical sprays is insufficient for long-term protection against Fall Armyworm. Repetitive use of a single active ingredient can cause the pest to develop resistance to that chemical group. To counter this, farmers should rotate between different classes of insecticides with distinct modes of action during subsequent treatments. Furthermore, keeping fields free of weeds and clearing residues from previous crops eliminates critical breeding grounds and shelter for the pest.
