A wildlife rescue in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district is being seen as fresh proof of how shrinking forests are pushing animals into residential neighbourhoods. Workers at a scrap warehouse in Bhilwara's Sanganer suburb were left panicked after they spotted a female honey badger, locally called kabra bijju, hiding inside along with her four newborn cubs. Word of the sighting spread quickly, drawing locals to the spot.
A two hour operation to bring the family out safely
As soon as the sighting was reported, wildlife protector Kuldeep Singh Ranawat rushed to the warehouse along with a forest department team. Extracting the mother and her cubs from among the scrap and stacked goods proved far from simple. It took the team nearly two hours of continuous effort before the female and all four of her newborns could be pulled out unharmed. Throughout the operation, bystanders were kept at a distance so that the animal would not feel threatened and no one would risk getting hurt.
How the team first learned about the badger
Kuldeep Singh Ranawat said his team was alerted that a badger had given birth to four cubs inside a scrap warehouse in Sanganer and was moving around the premises with them. The team set out for the site immediately after getting the tip. "This is the first case of a badger giving birth to cubs inside a residential area," Ranawat said. He noted that badgers typically deliver their young deep inside forests or in isolated stretches, which is what made this warehouse birth so unusual.
Nursery care now, a return to the forest later
Once the rescue was complete, the entire family was handed over to the forest department. On the instructions of the DFO, the mother and her four cubs will be kept for now in the forest department's nursery, where their health will be monitored. Once the cubs are a little older and the mother has fully recovered, the family will be released into a safe forest area so they can return to a natural habitat.
Why shrinking forests keep pushing animals towards people
Forest officials say that as forest cover keeps shrinking and residential areas keep expanding, the change is directly affecting how wildlife behaves. In search of food, safe shelter and quieter surroundings, several wild animals are increasingly being forced towards villages and towns. The Sanganer incident is being viewed as part of that same shifting pattern.

The forest department has appealed to residents that if any wild or potentially dangerous animal is spotted in a populated area, people should avoid panicking or trying to handle it themselves, and should instead immediately inform the nearest police station, the forest department or a wildlife protector. Only a timely alert makes it possible to rescue such an animal without harm and release it back into a safe forest area.
