Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is preparing to commence the long-awaited delivery of indigenous LCA Mk-1A fighter jets to the Indian Air Force by the end of this year. This milestone comes as the military branch faces a critical reduction in active fighter squadrons, which currently hover around 29 against an authorized strength of 42. With potential two-front security challenges along both western and eastern borders, India has accelerated domestic aviation projects alongside major procurements like French Rafale jets to maintain regional air superiority and operational readiness.
Current Status of Deliveries and Trials
Addressing the timeline for the program, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K. stated that final integration trials and radar calibrations are currently underway. The defense manufacturer aims to resolve these remaining micro-level adjustments within approximately a month. Final radar fine-tuning and pending weapon system trials are progressing steadily, ensuring that the aircraft meet all operational requirements before being handed over to military pilots. Deliveries of the first batch are anticipated to kick off around December.
Orders and Production Targets
The overall acquisition plan encompasses a massive 180 LCA Mk-1A jets structured across two distinct agreements valued at approximately 1.1 lakh crore rupees. The initial contract for 83 aircraft was signed in February 2021, followed by a secondary deal for 97 additional units in September 2025. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has set a target to supply roughly 10 Mk-1A jets during the 2026-27 financial year. Company leadership confirmed that 10 engines have already been received from GE Aerospace, while 27 aircraft airframes sit ready in production bays, allowing the assembly of the first deliverable batch based on available powerplants.
Overcoming Supply Chain Obstacles
The program experienced notable schedule slippages from its original baseline, where initial deliveries under the 2021 contract were originally scheduled to conclude by March 2024. Delays stemmed primarily from late shipments of F404-IN20 engines by GE Aerospace and necessary certification hurdles. To mitigate further downtime, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited adopted a continuous manufacturing strategy, building airframes ahead of time even without immediate engine allocations. With a sustained manufacturing capacity of 24 jets annually, company officials estimate that existing orders can be fulfilled within three to four years once engine supplies stabilize.
Expanding Indigenous Content and Future Variants
The follow-on procurement of 97 jets signed in 2025 incorporates a significantly higher proportion of locally sourced avionics and sub-systems. Approximately 40 imported components utilized in the initial 83 aircraft will be substituted with domestic alternatives, including the Uttam AESA radar and the Swayam Raksha Kavach electronic warfare suite. Meanwhile, development of the advanced LCA Mk-2 continues to progress, with structural assembly of the front, center, and rear fuselages already completed. Engineers are targeting an initial ground run by March 2027, followed by the maiden flight later that same year.
