Widespread torrential rainfall over the past 24 hours has disrupted daily operations across several parts of India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy downpours are anticipated to persist over multiple states in the coming days. Weather forecasters have issued alerts for intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and regions of the Northeast. In particular, parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya are bracing for extremely heavy precipitation, heightening risks of severe inundation in low-lying tracts.
Red Alert in Eight Kerala Districts amid Widespread Damage
The southern coastal state of Kerala remains worst hit by the current monsoon spell. The weather office has sounded a high-level red alert for eight districts over the next 24 hours, warning of rainfall exceeding 204 mm. The affected districts include Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Meanwhile, an orange alert stays active for Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Alappuzha. Raging rain-related incidents since August 1 have claimed 25 lives in Kerala, leaving four people missing and 10 injured. Between August 1 and August 4, structural destruction reached critical levels, with 52 houses fully destroyed and 565 homes partially damaged, forcing thousands of residents to seek refuge in emergency relief camps.
Rainfall Outlook for Northern, Eastern, and Central Regions
Moderate to heavy showers are expected today across Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Between August 5 and August 6, intense spells are forecast for Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Eastern Rajasthan, and the wider Delhi-NCR zone. Rainfall activity in Chhattisgarh is set to remain strong from August 5 to August 10, whereas Bihar and Jharkhand will experience persistent wet weather through August 8. Furthermore, maritime and coastal pockets including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and North Interior Karnataka face forecasts of scattered thunderstorms and turbulent weather conditions.
Flood Inundation Persists in Odisha, Gujarat, and Assam
Sustained precipitation has overwhelmed drainage systems and elevated river levels, inducing severe flood situations across several states. In Odisha, floodwaters have failed to recede from numerous submerged villages in Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Jagatsinghpur districts, keeping displaced villagers confined to relief facilities. The state faces additional risk as weather warnings highlight isolated, extremely heavy rain on August 5 and August 6. Similarly, urban and rural locations in Gujarat remain inundated under rising water levels. In Assam, flood conditions have submerged infrastructure and severely disrupted regional rail transport services, adding to commuting challenges across the northeastern corridor.
