According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area has formed over southwestern Rajasthan and the adjoining Kutch region, triggering a sudden shift in atmospheric conditions. Over the past 24 hours, significant precipitation was recorded across the Udaipur, Kota, Jodhpur, and Ajmer divisions, with Kotda in Udaipur receiving the highest rainfall at 88 millimeters. Meteorological officials indicate that this wet spell is far from over, as an upcoming weather system is expected to further intensify rainy conditions.
Impact of the New Western Disturbance
The convergence of the monsoon currents and a fresh Western Disturbance expected to activate over northwestern India on September 16 and 17 will bring widespread changes to the state. Weather experts note that several areas in eastern Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Kota, and Bharatpur divisions, will experience continuous light to moderate showers for the next three to four days. This period calls for heightened caution among farmers and the general public, as sudden squalls and lightning storms are likely to accompany the precipitation. Relief is anticipated for residents in western Rajasthan starting September 19, when atmospheric conditions are projected to become favorable for the eventual withdrawal of the monsoon.
Conditions in Jaipur and Udaipur Divisions
The capital city of Jaipur woke up to overcast skies, with the local meteorological center forecasting light to moderate downpours accompanied by thunder. Winds could reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour in and around Jaipur, prompting advisories for residents to stay indoors during severe spells and avoid waterlogged streets. Meanwhile, the lake city of Udaipur remains under heavy cloud cover following the record 88 mm of rain in Kotda. Intermittent showers are expected to persist across the Udaipur division for the next several days, and locals as well as tourists have been cautioned about rising water levels in hilly terrains.
Bikaner and Shekhawati Regions on Alert
Western Rajasthan is also bracing for turbulent weather as the approaching Western Disturbance impacts the Bikaner division on September 16 and 17. Districts such as Bikaner, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, and Churu are slated for thunderstorms accompanied by winds blowing at 30 to 40 km/h, alongside moderate rainfall. Farmers in these areas have been advised to take protective measures for their agricultural produce. Similarly, a yellow alert has been issued for the Kota division and the Shekhawati belt comprising Sikar and Jhunjhunu, where gusty winds and rain will help lower temperatures and provide relief from humid conditions before skies gradually clear starting September 19.
