Standing prominently along the shores of Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad, Telangana, the 125-foot bronze statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar has emerged as a landmark point of interest for both local residents and travelers across India. Beyond enhancing the city skyline, the grand monument serves as a tribute to the legacy, principles, and enduring contributions of the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
A 50-Foot Pedestal Modeled After the Old Parliament Building
A defining architectural element of the site is its 50-foot circular pedestal, designed to reflect the classic structure of the old Parliament building in Delhi. Combined with the 125-foot main sculpture, the structure reaches an aggregate height of 175 feet. The statue depicts Babasaheb holding the Constitution of India in one hand. Spread over an 11.7-acre landscaped green campus, the entire monument project was completed with an expenditure of approximately 146 crore rupees. The site was formally inaugurated on 14 April 2023 to mark the 132nd birth anniversary of Babasaheb.
Modern Museum, Library, and Accessibility Features Inside
The interior of the Parliament-inspired circular base houses a state-of-the-art museum alongside an expansive library. Visitors to the complex can explore detailed educational exhibits covering Babasaheb's life journey, his social philosophy, and the historic drafting of India's Constitution. To accommodate senior citizens and differently-abled visitors comfortably, the building features integrated modern lifts and escalators.
Sculpted by Ram Sutar's Team with Free Entry for Tourists
The structural design of the bronze statue was created by celebrated Indian sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar and his son Anil Ram Sutar. Ram Vanji Sutar is also widely known for designing Gujarat's Statue of Unity, recognized as the world's tallest statue. To guarantee long-term stability against environmental elements, the monument was built using nearly 360 tonnes of structural steel framework encased in approximately 114 tonnes of bronze plating. In the evenings, dynamic lighting illuminates the sculpture against the backdrop of Hussain Sagar Lake. Entry to the entire complex is kept completely free for the public.
