Political friction in Maharashtra has intensified significantly over the implementation of the SIR exercise. Bharatiya Janata Party state president Ravindra Chavan launched a sharp counterattack against the Garjana Morcha organized by the Thackeray brothers to protest the measure. Sharing a video clip of Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressing Parliament on the floor of the House, Chavan placed a series of direct queries before the protesting political parties and their leadership.
Fundamental Questions on Democratic Integrity
Drawing directly from the arguments presented by Amit Shah during parliamentary debates, Ravindra Chavan questioned whether outsiders and infiltrators should be allowed to decide who becomes the Prime Minister of the country or the Chief Minister of a state. He expressed grave concern over whether democratic structures could remain intact under such vulnerabilities.
Posting his message across social media platforms, the state party leader also asked whether a single voter should ever be granted permission to cast ballots in multiple jurisdictions. Alongside this, he raised the issue of deceased individuals whose names still linger on the official voting rolls, asking if such entries should be allowed to persist unchecked.
Scrutiny on Duplication and Inactive Voters
Chavan emphasized that transparency and accuracy within voter registries serve as foundational pillars for any functional democracy. He demanded to know why any political faction would stand against administrative efforts designed to eliminate glaring discrepancies, particularly duplicate registrations and the names of citizens who have passed away.
He urged opposition leaders questioning the process to clarify their own stances regarding these electoral anomalies before staging demonstrations. Correcting flawed records, he noted, is vital to maintaining public faith in the fairness of elections.
Challenge to Opponents Ahead of Further Protests
The state party chief explicitly told agitators that they must answer these critical concerns before opposing the cleanup drive. Following the high-profile mobilization led by the Thackeray brothers, Chavan's targeted remarks have escalated the political confrontation across the state. While opposition parties continue to challenge the rollout of the SIR system, the ruling party defends it as an essential step toward achieving a modern, transparent, and accurate electoral roll.
