A shocking crime has come to light from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, where the head of a village panchayat allegedly murdered his girlfriend and then drove her body nearly 350 kilometres away to Bhiwandi in an attempt to dispose of the evidence. Police identified the accused and have arrested him.
A married sarpanch and a hidden relationship
Investigators found that the accused, who serves as sarpanch of a village, was already married but was in a relationship with the woman he later killed. Fearing that the affair would come out and damage his standing, he wanted to keep it secret at any cost. When the risk of exposure grew, he allegedly decided to eliminate his girlfriend and killed her.
A 350 km drive to dump the body
After the murder, the accused could not find a safe spot nearby to hide the body. He is then said to have placed the body in his car and driven roughly 350 kilometres from Kolhapur to Bhiwandi. Despite covering such a long distance, he failed to erase all evidence, and his role in the crime was exposed soon after he reached Bhiwandi. Police reached the spot and took him into custody.
Part of a wider pattern
According to news reports, several similar cases have surfaced across the country in recent months, where people accused of hiding relationships or facing pressure to marry have allegedly killed their partners and then transported the bodies to distant locations to avoid detection. The Kolhapur case appears to fit this same pattern, with fear of the relationship being exposed allegedly pushing the accused to commit murder.
