In a strategic push to make international relations and foreign policy accessible to the younger generation, India's Ministry of External Affairs has officially expanded its social media footprint to Snapchat. The ministry already maintains a robust presence across major digital platforms including X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn. However, to bridge the gap with youth and Gen Z audiences, the ministry has chosen to leverage Snapchat's immensely popular visual format. This initiative aims to demystify complex diplomatic affairs and convey key national policy updates through engaging, bite-sized digital content.
Official Announcement by MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal
The introduction to Snapchat was formally announced by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal through a video message posted on X. In his address, the spokesperson encouraged citizens and young social media users to connect with the ministry's new Snapchat handle. He outlined that the platform would offer more than basic press statements, providing followers with exclusive visual stories, real-time updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and tailored creative content. The effort is designed to build a more interactive and relatable bridge between young citizens and India's diplomatic apparatus.
Aligning with PM Narendra Modi's Interactive Outreach Vision
This digital expansion aligns closely with recent administrative directions set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During a recent interaction with union ministers, PM Modi emphasized the necessity of maintaining an active, responsive digital presence to engage effectively with young citizens. He encouraged ministers to move beyond static releases and embrace interactive communication tools, such as short-form video reels and dynamic visual posts. Recognizing that youth consume information primarily through mobile-first, visual platforms, the ministry pivoted to ensure its official communications reach audiences where they are most active.
A 15-Year Evolution of India's Digital Diplomacy
The Ministry of External Affairs has been a pioneer in digital outreach, boasting a history that spans nearly one and a half decades. The journey began in 2010 with the launch of the @IndianDiplomacy Twitter account, created to highlight India's global diplomatic narrative. This was followed in 2011 by the @MEAIndia account, established specifically for official announcements and spokesperson briefings. The ministry subsequently expanded to Facebook in 2012, before establishing dedicated channels on YouTube, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Furthermore, Indian embassies, high commissions, and diplomatic posts across the globe actively use social media to assist overseas Indians and share vital information. To streamline citizen services on mobile devices, the ministry also launched the MEA India mobile app in July 2013.
Harmonizing Digital Innovation with Traditional Media Channels
The integration of Snapchat into the ministry's outreach framework marks another step toward a fully integrated, multi-channel communication strategy. While adopting modern digital tools allows the ministry to simplify serious foreign policy topics for younger demographics, it continues to reinforce traditional media relations. To ensure consistent flow of verified information, the ministry has made its weekly press briefings substantially more regular and structured. By combining real-time interactive social media engagements with disciplined traditional media briefings, the ministry ensures comprehensive communication across all demographic segments.
