Atmospheric scientists had previously projected that El Nino conditions would negatively impact the Indian monsoon, with several climate experts even warning about the potential activation of a Super El Nino. However, the current ground reality across the country presents a starkly different narrative. Continuous downpours stretching from the western state of Gujarat to the northeastern state of Assam have caused rivers and drainage streams to overflow, causing normal life to derail. Heavy rainfall in mountainous regions has caused landslides that blocked vital traffic routes, while low-lying plains face extensive waterlogging. Consequently, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall alerts across several states.
Assam Floods Cause Widespread Devastation Defying Initial El Nino Forecasts
The flood situation in the northeastern state of Assam remains critically grave following relentless torrential rainfall. According to official data released by state disaster management authorities, the cumulative death toll from monsoon flooding in Assam has climbed to 78. In the latest spell of inundation, 3 more fatalities were reported across the state, including 2 deaths in Sivasagar district and 1 death in Golaghat district. Currently, at least 7 major districts remain severely affected by floodwaters, namely Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath, and Kamrup Metro.
The expanding floodwaters have inundated 551 villages located across 21 revenue circles, directly affecting an estimated 3,00,031 residents who are now contending with displacement and severe hardship. The agricultural sector has also suffered extensive damage, with approximately 21,523.08 hectares of crop fields submerged under water. In Kamrup Metro district, urban flooding has caused severe waterlogging across several residential colonies and road networks in Guwahati. In response, the state government has accelerated relief and rescue operations. Minister Atul Bora confirmed that under the guidance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, administrative agencies are distributing financial assistance of Rs 15,000 to affected families alongside ongoing distribution of essential relief materials.
Landslides in Uttarakhand's Chamoli Block Badrinath and Kedarnath Corridors
In the northern hill state of Uttarakhand, continuous heavy downpours have severely disrupted daily life throughout Chamoli district. Intermittent torrential rain across most areas has caused local rivers and mountain streams to swell rapidly, triggering frequent landslides along high-altitude slopes. The relentless precipitation has led to a total blockade of the Badrinath National Highway. Heavy debris and large boulders cascading down near Bhanerpani in the Pipalkoti sector have rendered the highway completely impassable, causing severe distress to pilgrims journeying toward the Badrinath shrine as well as local residents.
Clearance crews from the NHDCL are actively engaged on site to clear the accumulated mud and restore traffic flow, but recurring landslides on the hillside continue to hamper clearing efforts. The destruction is not limited to the national highway; more than 13 rural feeder roads connecting remote areas of Chamoli district have also been blocked by mudslides. Key connecting roads in Dewal, Tharali, and Nandanagar areas remain buried under landslide debris, severing communications between far-flung mountain villages and district headquarters. Simultaneously, landslide debris has accumulated along the Kedarnath Highway, disrupting vehicular movement on that critical pilgrimage route as well.
Precautionary Measures in Jammu and Kashmir and Status of Chenab Valley Roads
In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, local authorities implemented precautionary measures in response to deteriorating weather conditions and persistent rainfall across Doda and Kishtwar districts. Administration officials ordered the temporary closure of educational institutions in most parts of Doda and Kishtwar as a preventive safety measure. Moderate to heavy rainfall commenced around 5:00 AM across the Chenab valley region covering Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts, continuing uninterrupted across several locations throughout the day.
With meteorological forecasts indicating that moderate to heavy rainfall will persist in the coming days, administrative teams are keeping a vigilant watch over developing conditions. Rain-drenched mountain roads have become exceedingly slippery, while the risk of falling rocks and rolling boulders remains high in sensitive terrain. Authorities have strongly urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and closely adhere to official weather advisories. Meanwhile, vehicular movement along the strategically critical Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained operational. Despite continuous precipitation, the highway stayed open with traffic moving normally. As the sole arterial road connection linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the nation, administration personnel are keeping the highway under continuous specialized monitoring.

Technical reports issued by the IMD indicate that the Deep Depression positioned over central parts of Chhattisgarh tracked westward at a speed of 15 kmph over the preceding 6 hours. As of 2330 hrs IST on July 29, 2026, the weather system was centered over the western parts of central Chhattisgarh and adjoining eastern Madhya Pradesh near latitude 21.9°N.
Taking into account the Deep Depression formation over West Bengal, the India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple eastern and central states. According to the IMD weather bulletin, isolated heavy to very heavy precipitation is expected across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand. Concurrently, a Yellow Alert has been issued for the Delhi-NCR region, where moderate rainfall accompanied by strong surface winds is anticipated.
Monsoon Set to Revive Across Multiple Bihar Districts
In the eastern state of Bihar, monsoon progress had experienced a temporary slowdown in recent days, resulting in warm and humid conditions for local populations. However, weather forecasting authorities have now indicated strong prospects for the revival of monsoon activity across the state. According to reports from the Meteorological Centre in Patna, rain-bearing cloud systems are expected to reactivate over several districts in North Bihar, Seemanchal, and South Bihar.
