The 2026 Monsoon Session of Parliament was adjourned sine die on Friday following the completion of scheduled legislative business and intense discussions over a political controversy in Uttarakhand. Both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha wrapped up their proceedings after the rendition of the national song Vande Mataram, marking the end of the session.
Rajya Sabha Proceedings and Passage of the Mining Amendment Bill
The Rajya Sabha convened at 11:00 AM on Friday with Chairman C P Radhakrishnan presiding over the initial formalities of laying official documents on the table. The Chairman suspended the regular Zero Hour and Question Hour to take up the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, requesting Mining Minister G Kishan Reddy to introduce the measure for discussion and passage.
Following a brief debate, Minister G Kishan Reddy addressed the points raised by members, after which the upper house passed the legislation by voice vote. The bill had previously received approval from the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Immediately after the passage of the bill at 12:05 PM, Chairman C P Radhakrishnan announced the adjournment of the Rajya Sabha sine die as the national song played in the chamber.
Controversy Surrounding the Haldwani Hawan and Mallikarjun Kharge's Objections
The closing day of the session was marked by discussions regarding an event at the Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. On 8 August, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had addressed a 'Vijay Shankhnaad' rally at the venue. Subsequently, an organization named Shreeram Sena Dharmarth Seva Nyas conducted a 'Shuddhikaran Hawan' (purification ritual) at the same site.
Expressing strong objection in the house, Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the necessity of conducting a purification ritual at a public ground utilized by various political parties for public meetings. Kharge stated that such acts reflect ongoing discrimination against marginalized sections and represent attempts to create societal divisions along caste lines, describing the step as contrary to core religious principles.
JP Nadda Assures Investigation into the Incident
Responding to the opposition's concerns in the Rajya Sabha, BJP leader J P Nadda clarified that the party does not endorse activities such as the reported site purification following Mallikarjun Kharge's rally in Uttarakhand.
J P Nadda stated that concerns over the incident extend to the entire nation beyond political lines. He assured the house that a thorough investigation into the matter would be conducted to establish the complete facts surrounding the event.
Lok Sabha Concludes Session in Presence of Top Leaders
The Lok Sabha also concluded its Monsoon Session proceedings on Friday morning. The day opened with the full singing of Vande Mataram in the chamber, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders.
Upon the conclusion of the national song, Speaker Om Birla formally announced the adjournment of the Lok Sabha sine die, bringing the 2026 Monsoon Session to a close.
