Law enforcement authorities in Canada have taken major action in the high-profile shooting cases involving a cafe owned by Indian comedian Kapil Sharma and a residential property in Surrey. The Provincial Extortion Prevention Task Force has officially laid charges against two individuals who were captured in Surrey on November 1 and have remained in custody ever since. The extensive investigation into these violent incidents involved close coordination among multiple specialized police units in British Columbia.
Multiple Shooting Incidents Investigated
According to investigators, the two suspects face two counts each of careless discharge of a firearm relating to separate shooting incidents. One of these attacks targeted the Cups Cafe, owned by Kapil Sharma, on October 16, 2025. Fortunately, the establishment was closed at the time of the shooting, and two employees working inside escaped without any injuries. The brazen attack sent shockwaves through the local business community.
Residential Attack and Task Force Involvement
Just four days prior to the cafe incident, on October 12, 2025, a home located in the 13000 block of 103A Avenue was also targeted in a drive-by shooting that left a woman injured. Once investigators discovered potential links between the two violent events, the Provincial Extortion Prevention Task Force stepped in to lead the probe. The arrests and subsequent legal steps were carried out with the collaborative assistance of the Surrey Police Service and the Combined Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia.
Over a Year of Detailed Investigation
RCMP senior officer Chief Superintendent Duncan Pound noted that the formal charges followed an exhaustive investigation lasting more than a year. The probe involved executing search warrants, securing judicial authorizations, and conducting meticulous forensic analysis of all gathered evidence. He emphasized that law enforcement agencies fully recognize and share the community's concerns regarding public safety and organized violence.
Broader Context of Extortion Concerns
Although police statements did not explicitly mention a specific extortion demand linked to these particular shootings or confirm the nationality of the suspects, regional authorities have been cracking down on organized crime. Media reports indicated that the cafe had faced previous security threats, and videos tied to the attackers had circulated widely online. In response to a surge in such incidents, the British Columbia government established the specialized task force in September 2025 to coordinate regional efforts against extortion-related violence.
