A public grievance camp organised by Karnataka's social welfare department in Bengaluru Rural district turned tense after a woman sitting right in front of the stage broke into an open protest over how officials were handling applications. The event was held in Vijayapura town of Devanahalli taluk, and Social Welfare Minister K.H. Muniyappa was present when a woman named Taslima declared that if officials kept troubling people this way, she would not vote for the Congress party in the next election. The camp had been set up so that people's problems could be resolved on the spot, but her protest exposed how the arrangement was actually working.
Waiting since morning, then the anger boiled over
Taslima said she had been sitting at the venue with her problem since the morning, but hours passed without any official bothering to hear her out. When her turn never came and only a handful of chosen people were being called up to the stage, she lost her patience. In anger, she tore up her filled application form on the spot and directed her frustration at both the officials and the government. Taslima said, "If officials keep harassing people like this, I will not vote for Congress next time."
Complaint over caste certificate and ration card
According to Taslima, she needed a caste certificate and a ration card, but officials kept sending her application back. She said she had no document besides her Aadhaar card and voter ID, yet officials still refused to accept her paperwork. She alleged that the hearing at the camp had been reduced to a mere formality, with no one paying attention to the difficulties of ordinary people.
The purpose of the camp itself was left unmet
The social welfare department had organised the Janasewa programme so that people's grievances could be resolved on the spot, sparing them repeated trips to government offices. But Taslima's outburst raised questions about the entire arrangement. She argued that if a programme is meant to hear public problems, officials should have heard out every person instead of just calling a select few onto the stage to complete a formality.
MLA Dheeraj Muniraj also slams officials
Doddaballapura MLA Dheeraj Muniraj also took officials to task over the episode. He said the public had not been given adequate information about the programme, which caused inconvenience. He questioned the functioning of the taluk administration and criticised the taluk magistrate from the stage itself. The MLA said such programmes cannot serve their real purpose unless public opinion and participation are part of the process. He added that people's presence and their problems, not paperwork formalities, should be the top priority at any Janasewa event. He also congratulated Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for starting such an initiative, saying it could help deliver government schemes directly to the public.
Bike catches fire on highway, causes brief panic
In an unrelated incident, a moving motorcycle suddenly caught fire on NH-75 near Chikkanahalli gate in Hoskote taluk. The bike was travelling from Bengaluru towards Visakhapatnam. A technical fault was said to have triggered the fire, and the motorcycle was quickly engulfed in flames. The incident caused brief panic on the highway, with riders forced to navigate around it cautiously.
