A major relief is on the horizon for railway passengers commuting between Delhi and Bihar, as premier superfast trains like Sampoorna Kranti, Vikramshila, and Humsafar will soon be able to reach Patna Junction without any disruptions or delays. Traditionally, heavy freight traffic ahead of Patna Junction often forced these high-priority passenger trains to wait outside the station or at Danapur. Compounded by its location on the heavily congested Delhi-Howrah route, passenger trains pass through this corridor continuously around the clock. To resolve this persistent bottleneck, Indian Railways has ensured that goods trains will no longer need to enter Patna Junction, as their routes will be diverted well in advance. This operational transformation is made possible by the official approval granted to the newly constructed Neura-Jatdumuri rail line.
CRS clearance and successful high-speed trial
This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing railway operations across Bihar and alleviating congestion on heavily burdened tracks. The Commissioner of Railway Safety has officially cleared train operations for the 20-kilometer-long section of the Neura-Jatdumuri new rail line, which falls under the Danapur division of East Central Railway. This clearance paves the way for freight trains to bypass Patna entirely by utilizing an alternative route. According to East Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Saraswati Chandra, a rigorous inspection of this rail section was conducted on October 8. During this inspection, a successful speed trial hitting 120 kilometers per hour was executed. Following the strict verification of all prescribed safety parameters, the CRS granted formal permission for commercial and operational traffic.
Project scope and the upcoming bypass route
The newly cleared section is an integral part of the broader 42-kilometer-long Neura-Daniawan new rail line project. Under the first phase of this infrastructure initiative, the 22.74-kilometer Jatdumuri-Daniawan segment was completed earlier and is already operational. With the final 20-kilometer Neura-Jatdumuri stretch now approved, the entire project nears completion. Once fully functional, freight trains will be able to completely bypass Patna by routing through Neura, Daniawan, Biharsharif, Barbigha, Sheikhpura, and Kiul. This shift will drastically reduce congestion along the Danapur-Patna-Kiul-Jhajha rail corridor, opening up vital capacity for running additional passenger services. This 187-kilometer rail corridor forms a critical part of the primary Delhi-Howrah main line, recognized as one of the busiest rail arteries in the entire country.
Infrastructure and station upgrades along the route
To support seamless operations along this new rail link, extensive infrastructure has been developed between Neura Junction and Jatdumuri Junction. The project features a newly established Gonpura station, alongside three newly designated halts at Adhpa, Chamachak, and Wajidpur. Engineering marvels along the stretch include three major bridges and 16 minor bridges to ensure smooth terrain crossing. Furthermore, the route incorporates five limited-height subways, two road overbridges, a specialized rail-over-rail structure, and 12 road underbridges to eliminate level-crossing bottlenecks and ensure uninterrupted local transit.
