Devotees in the holy coastal city of Puri witnessed a deeply spiritual moment on Monday morning as the doors of Shri Gundicha Temple, revered as the sacred birthplace of Lord Jagannath, were thrown open to the public after a gap of six long years. The shrine had remained shut to visitors since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. For worshippers who had been waiting through the extended closure, the reopening brought an immense sense of relief and devotion, with large crowds gathering at the premises from early morning hours to offer their prayers.
Traditional Rituals Precede 7:45 AM Entry for Worshippers
Before allowing the general public inside the complex, servitors performed an elaborate series of traditional prayers and foundational Vedic rituals. Once all scheduled religious rites were formally executed, the temple gates were officially unlocked for devotees at around 7:45 AM. The chief administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration was also present inside the premises alongside the pilgrims to witness the inaugural day proceedings. Enthusiastic crowds formed disciplined lines to seek darshan at the Janmavedi of the Holy Trinity on the very first day.
Free Entry for Initial Three Days, Followed by a 10 Rupee Ticket
To celebrate the occasion and accommodate the initial influx of pilgrims smoothly, temple authorities announced completely free entry for the first three consecutive days. Once this introductory period concludes, regular visitors will be required to purchase a standard nominal admission pass priced at 10 rupees per head. Administrative personnel stated that all necessary logistical frameworks have been put into operation so that visitors face no disruption while proceeding through the designated sanctum routes.
Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, Arvind Kumar Padhee, noted that Shri Gundicha Temple holds profound religious sanctity among followers of Sanatana traditions, who worship it as the sacred birthplace of Lord Jagannath. Padhee explained that reopening the shrine after several years ensures that every pilgrim visiting the holy territory of Puri can now complete their spiritual itinerary by visiting the revered Janmavedi. He emphasized that comprehensive arrangements have been deployed to ensure a safe, tranquil, and comfortable experience for every worshipper.
Strict Security Measures Enforced at the Lions Gate
Anticipating high visitor numbers in the coming days, comprehensive security and crowd regulation mechanisms were established jointly by the temple management, district authorities, and local police. Outlining the law and order deployment, Puri Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh stated, “The holy Gundicha Temple has now been opened for regular devotees, and our team has implemented all necessary security measures. Pilgrims will enter the premises using tickets through the Singhadwara, where comprehensive security deployments are stationed.”
The return of regular public darshan after six years has brought widespread happiness to servitors, temple staff, and devotees alike, energizing the overall devotional atmosphere across Puri. With the festive season fast approaching, the restoration of daily access to Gundicha Temple is viewed as a landmark milestone for pilgrims traveling to Odisha from across the country.
