Indian Railways has introduced a significant passenger welfare measure by extending its optional travel cover to travellers who purchase reserved tickets directly from physical booking windows. Previously, this safety net was restricted solely to passengers booking digital e-tickets via the IRCTC platform. Starting October 27, anyone reserving a berth at Passenger Reservation System counters across the country can opt into this financial safeguard during their train journey.
How to Avail the Cover at Station Windows
Securing this optional travel protection at railway ticket windows requires fulfilling a couple of simple procedural steps during the booking transaction. Passengers must supply their valid mobile contact number to the booking clerk at the counter, which ensures that all policy details and confirmation updates reach them directly via SMS. The insurance premium has been set at an economical rate of just 45 paise per passenger, and this amount must be paid through digital payment modes. Counter reservation staff have been assigned to guide travellers through the enrolment procedure, record necessary passenger information, and handle the digital premium collection.
Compensation Brackets and Financial Protection Details
Designed to support passengers and their families in the event of an untoward incident or train accident, this cover offers tiered financial assistance depending on the severity of the mishap
- In the tragic event of a passenger's demise, a sum of Rs 10 lakh is provided to the nominees.
- Cases resulting in permanent total disability receive coverage of Rs 10 lakh.
- Passengers who suffer permanent partial disability are entitled to a payout of up to Rs 7.5 lakh.
- To cover emergency hospitalisation and medical treatment expenses, the policy grants up to Rs 2 lakh.
- The scheme also allocates Rs 10,000 to assist with the dignified transportation of mortal remains.
Uniform Guidelines and Advisory for Passengers
Railway authorities have stated that the terms, operational rules, and claim procedures for counter-booked insurance are identical to those applicable to online IRCTC e-ticket holders. Central Railway has urged the travelling public to actively opt for this nominal safeguard, emphasizing that an outlay of merely 45 paise secures immense economic cushioning against unexpected travel emergencies. Railway officials maintained that safeguarding passenger interests remains a guiding objective, and further citizen-focused travel amenities will continue to be implemented.
