Continuous and heavy rainfall in the catchment areas as well as within Ayodhya has led to a steep rise in the water level of the Saryu River. The river has breached its designated danger mark, triggering concerns of potential flooding across nearby low-lying settlements. With the holy month of Sawan underway, thousands of pilgrims have gathered in the sacred city for religious rituals. In response to the surging waters, the district administration and disaster relief machinery have placed all emergency operations on high alert to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents.
Water Level Metrics and Central Water Commission Data
Official records from the Central Water Commission indicate that the water level of the Saryu River reached 92.960 meters, which is exactly 23 centimeters above the official danger threshold. Consistent downpours in the upper reaches have led to a steady daily increment in the river volume. Despite this breach, hydrological data offers a minor respite: the current water height remains more than one meter below the historical High Flood Level. Nonetheless, crossing the danger line has activated precautionary emergency protocols across all municipal and district departments.
Providing details on the hydrological situation, Central Water Commission engineer Akash Pratap Singh noted, "Presently the water level of Saryu stands at 92.960 meters, flowing 23 centimeters above the danger level." Commission experts emphasized that continued precipitation in the upstream regions will likely drive the water level higher in the coming hours. Conversely, should the rains abate in the catchment belt, the swelling river is expected to stabilize gradually.
Monitoring Protocols in Low-Lying Residential Belts
To safeguard residents in vulnerable areas, the district administration has intensified round-the-clock surveillance across riverside neighborhoods. Concerned departments are receiving hourly updates regarding fluctuations in the water line to ensure prompt emergency responses. Furthermore, comprehensive flood forecasting reports are being compiled and dispatched every three hours to evaluate the potential spread of inundation. Officials have initiated the process of relocating families residing in high-risk zones to designated safe shelters.
Safety Regulations for Sawan Pilgrims
The swelling of the river coincides with the ongoing Sawan festival, an auspicious period when large crowds of devotees visit Ayodhya to take a holy dip in the Saryu. Recognizing the hazards posed by swift currents and expanding riverbanks, local authorities have implemented stringent crowd control and safety measures along the bathing ghats. River police units and trained divers have been deployed along the shoreline. Administration officials are urging all visiting pilgrims to remain behind safety barriers and rigorously follow safety advisories issued by law enforcement personnel.
