Paddy cultivators in Shahjahanpur district are facing a significant agricultural challenge as Bakanae, commonly known as Flag disease, spreads across rice fields during the current growing season. Affected rice plants exhibit abnormal vertical growth, standing noticeably taller, thinner, and paler than healthy surrounding crops. Appearing like distinct flags across the fields from a distance, this fungal infection poses a catastrophic threat to standing crops if left unchecked. Agricultural experts warn that unmitigated outbreaks can dry out entire fields, leading to heavy yield reductions ranging between 20 percent and 50 percent. Local farming communities have been urged to adopt immediate diagnostic and corrective measures to safeguard their seasonal harvest.
Identifying Key Symptoms of Flag Disease in Paddy Fields
Early identification of Flag disease remains vital for preventing extensive field damage. The most prominent symptom is the rapid, abnormal elongation of infected stems, making them appear significantly taller and more slender than standard paddy plants. As the infection progresses, leaves lose their rich green coloration and turn light yellow. Inspection near the basal stem and root zone frequently reveals visible white to pinkish fungal colonies. Over time, the internal stem structure hollows out, causing the plant to collapse and dry up completely. Furthermore, infected plants either fail to produce panicles entirely or yield light, sterile heads containing no grain, directly impacting final production volume.
Primary Causes and Immediate Remedial Measures
According to progressive farmer Ranjod Singh, the disease is triggered by the fungal pathogen 'Fusarium fujikuroi'. Upon detecting symptoms, farmers must execute immediate sanitation protocols. The infected plants should be meticulously uprooted along with their root structures and either buried in deep pits far from cultivation areas or completely burned. Standing water must be drained from the field right away, as stagnant surface water acts as a primary vector for spore dispersion. Allowing the topsoil to dry slightly halts fungal progress. Crucially, farmers must suspend all nitrogen or urea applications immediately; excess nitrogen fuels abnormal vegetative elongation, aggravating fungal damage.
Chemical and Biological Fungicide Application Guidelines
Chemical intervention plays a crucial role in curbing active fungal spread across paddy fields. Farmers are advised to spray a mixture of 2 grams of Carbendazim 12% + Mancozeb 63% WP (commercially available as SAAF) or Tricyclazole per liter of water across affected areas. In cases of severe infection, a combined formulation of Tebuconazole and Trifloxystrobin offers superior control. For organic management, applying 2 to 3 kilograms of Trichoderma per acre mixed with well-decomposed farmyard manure during field irrigation helps eliminate soil-borne pathogens naturally, restoring microbial balance in the soil.
Long-Term Prevention Through Seed Treatment and Crop Rotation
Achieving durable resistance against Flag disease requires preventive practices established before planting. Pre-sowing seed treatment using 2 to 3 grams of Trichoderma or Carbendazim per kilogram of rice seed is the most effective defense against seed-borne fungal spores. During nursery preparation and transplanting, seedling roots should be immersed in a protective fungicide solution for 30 minutes before field placement. Additionally, selecting disease-resistant paddy varieties and implementing crop rotation rather than continuous rice monoculture effectively breaks the fungal survival cycle in local soils.
