The high-profile legal battle surrounding former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal has taken a fresh turn as his daughter, Kara Tejpal, has come forward to declare her father completely innocent. She asserted that the entire case against him is part of a calculated political conspiracy designed specifically to silence him. Claiming that she has spent the last 13 years reviewing all evidence and documents related to the case, she stated this is why she holds unwavering faith in his innocence. Urging the public not to rely solely on sensational media headlines, she asked people to examine the available evidence themselves. According to her, her father was targeted due to the fearless and independent journalism published in Tehelka against the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Bombay High Court Sentencing and Case Background
This statement emerged shortly after the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court sentenced Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison in connection with a 2013 sexual harassment case, while also directing him to surrender. The High Court's ruling overturned a Goa trial court's verdict from May 2021 that had acquitted him of all charges. The case dates back to November 2013 during the ThinkFest event held in Goa, where a former junior female colleague accused him of sexual harassment inside the elevator of a five-star hotel. The allegations pertained to incidents allegedly occurring on 7 and 8 November 2013. Following the allegations, Tejpal was arrested on 30 November 2013 and subsequently resigned from his position as editor-in-chief of Tehelka.
Previous Acquittal and Upcoming Supreme Court Appeal
During the earlier stages of the trial in May 2021, a local court in Goa had exonerated him of all charges, including wrongful confinement, assault or criminal force with intent to outrage modesty, sexual harassment, and rape. The Goa government subsequently challenged that acquittal in the High Court. Following the recent High Court ruling, Tejpal himself described the outcome as the result of a political conspiracy and announced his intention to approach the Supreme Court to contest the decision.

In her statement, Kara noted that Tehelka's journalism was independent and fearless, which forced its founding editor to face the wrath of the state. She alleged that for the ruling government, Tejpal posed a significant challenge, and the most effective way to silence him was to portray him as a rapist. However, these allegations remain personal claims by family members. Following the High Court verdict, the final legal standing of the matter now depends entirely on the upcoming proceedings in the Supreme Court.
