Doctors treating environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk at two Delhi hospitals say his condition has stabilised for now, though fresh blood test results are showing small but noticeable shifts that are keeping his care team on alert.
Vitals steady, blood markers under watch
Wangchuk continues to be treated at Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Hospital officials say his essential vital parameters are currently holding steady, but certain values from his blood work have shown mild fluctuation. Given the physical strain that an extended fast places on the body, the hospital says he needs uninterrupted care from a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who are tracking his recovery closely.
Why round-the-clock monitoring continues
Treating teams from VMMC, Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS say that even though Wangchuk's condition looks steady right now, sustained treatment and 24-hour clinical observation remain essential so that any complication can be spotted and handled without delay. As a result, he is being given every form of medical care he needs, and his clinical status, including his blood parameters, is being tracked without a break.
What Saturday night's statement said
A day earlier, around 9 pm on Saturday, Safdarjung Hospital had put out a statement noting that Wangchuk was conscious, and that his pulse rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen level were within the normal range at that point. The hospital had also flagged visible signs of dehydration brought on by his prolonged fast, and said he urgently needed fluids and electrolytes, either orally or intravenously, on medical grounds.
How he ended up in hospital
Delhi Police brought Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital by force on the 21st day of his fast. He has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28. An independent specialist from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi separately examined him and agreed with the assessment of his treating doctors that he urgently required fluid and electrolyte treatment.
