External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday voiced significant concern regarding the state of global diplomacy and the world economy, noting that two severe geopolitical conflicts currently dominate international developments. With active unrest persisting across the Gulf region alongside the ongoing confrontation in Ukraine, global stability has faced severe disruption. India maintains constructive and strong bilateral relationships with nearly all stakeholders engaged in both these disputes, which makes the formulation and maintenance of a well-calibrated, balanced policy posture a delicate and demanding undertaking.
The Growing Weaponization of Global Commerce
Beyond military engagements, Jaishankar directed attention toward the structural distortions emerging within global trade networks. He observed that economic mechanisms are increasingly being converted into geopolitical leverage. Erratic volatility in customs tariffs and the widespread practice of dumping goods into vulnerable markets have emerged as prominent systemic threats. Under these circumstances, determining the most capable and resilient operational strategy to counter such trade-distorting actions has become an urgent policy question for developing nations.
Expanding Strategic Horizons and Rising Diplomatic Expectations
Addressing the shifting landscape of India's foreign policy, the External Affairs Minister noted that expanding commercial footprints and diverse international partnerships naturally bring greater complexity. India currently engages with a substantially larger number of countries and geographical zones than in previous eras. Consequently, as the nation's strategic stakes become truly international, expectations from the global community have risen at an identical pace. Jaishankar explained that maintaining strategic relevance requires India to continuously refine and adapt its policy responses, recognizing that sustainable solutions frequently depend on fine-tuning and harmonizing competing objectives.
Championing the Global South with an Authentic Perspective
The minister noted that India now articulates its positions on global platforms with greater self-assurance, particularly when advocating for matters concerning the Global South. As India's diplomatic weight expands, its domestic intellectual discourse on foreign affairs must match that momentum. Jaishankar remarked that mainstream international relations paradigms have long been dominated by concepts originating from foreign contexts. To establish a truly authentic voice, an emerging India must interpret world events through the prism of its own civilizational history, unique domestic experiences, structural interests, and conceptual vocabulary.
