Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath officially inaugurated the statewide 9th National Nutrition Month from the Rudraksha Convention Center in Varanasi on September 9, 2026. Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi also attended the launch ceremony. This nationwide initiative focuses on improving maternal and child health, enhancing dietary diversity, and strengthening health monitoring systems to eliminate malnutrition. During the event, the leadership underscored the government's commitment to modernizing and empowering Anganwadi centers across the region.
Focus on Malnutrition Eradication and Early Child Development
The 9th edition of the National Nutrition Month prioritizes optimizing physical and cognitive growth during the first six years of a child's life. Medical research highlights that critical brain development occurs within these initial six years, making proper nutritional intake essential. Under this campaign, Anganwadi centers are providing children aged 3 to 6 years with fresh milk, seasonal fruits, and wholesome morning breakfasts daily. Additionally, the initiative ensures that pregnant women and lactating mothers receive balanced diets and necessary micronutrient supplements.
Empowerment and Recognition of Anganwadi Workers
Highlighting the critical role of frontline healthcare providers, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath commended Anganwadi workers as the primary strength in combating malnutrition. Exemplary Anganwadi workers were formally honored during the Varanasi event for their dedicated service. The state administration emphasized that achieving a healthier Uttar Pradesh requires upgrading physical infrastructure at Anganwadi centers, implementing digital tracking mechanisms, and conducting regular training programs for grassroots staff.
Community Outreach and Health Monitoring
Throughout the month-long drive, community-based activities will promote the consumption of locally available nutrient-rich foods, green vegetables, pulses, and traditional coarse grains. Specialized health camps are being organized to conduct regular check-ups for expectant mothers, track children's growth parameters, and identify early indicators of malnutrition to ensure timely intervention.
