About Kolkata and Its Geographical Significance
Kolkata serves as the capital of West Bengal and stands among India's foremost metropolitan centres. Located along the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, the city lies approximately 80 kilometres from the Bangladesh border and roughly 180 kilometres from the northern coastline of the Bay of Bengal. It ranks as the second-largest urban agglomeration and the fifth-largest port hub in India. Widely celebrated as the cultural and educational crucible of modern Indian history, Kolkata is frequently referred to as the City of Palaces as well as the City of Joy. Its modern administrative evolution gained momentum following the year 1698, when British colonial authorities acquired landholding rights across three villages, leading to the establishment of Fort William in 1700.
