Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has secured the top spot in a national ranking of clean air performance among Indian cities. Union Minister Rajnath Singh shared the news on the social media platform X, stating that under the City Level Clean Air Survey 2026 conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Lucknow was ranked Number 1 among the National Level Best Performing Cities under the National Clean Air Programme, known as NCAP.
What the Survey Measures
Each year, the Environment Ministry evaluates the steps taken by cities across the country to improve air quality and compiles the City Level Clean Air Survey based on their performance. The survey ranks cities to identify which ones have made the most progress in controlling pollution and ensuring cleaner air for residents. In the 2026 edition of this survey, Lucknow outperformed other cities to claim the top rank, a result being seen as a significant achievement for the city.
