A distressing and tragic incident has emerged from Odisha's Gajapati district, where a unsuspecting family sleeping at home was targeted by deadly reptiles in the middle of the night. The event transpired in Kadamatal village, falling under Jalanga panchayat within the Rayagada block, late on Thursday night. Two highly venomous snakes slithered inside a residential house while the household members were fast asleep, inflicting lethal bites on a mother and her seven-year-old son. Both victims succumbed to the snake venom during medical treatment, casting a heavy pall of gloom over the entire village.
Midnight Snake Intrusion in Kadamatal Village
According to authentic details of the incident, local resident Ajay Kumar Raita was resting in his house on Thursday night alongside his family members. The family, comprising Ajay Kumar Raita, his wife Lalita Raita, their seven-year-old son Amit Kumar Raita, and their approximately one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, were all asleep in their room. Taking advantage of the nighttime darkness, two venomous snakes quietly entered the home. While the family remained unaware in deep sleep, the reptiles bit Lalita Raita and young Amit Kumar Raita on their hands.
Sudden Cries of Agony Trigger Panic
As the toxic venom entered their bloodstream, the mother and son began crying out in excruciating pain. Hearing their distress, Ajay Kumar Raita woke up abruptly. Upon switching on the light, he spotted two dangerous snakes right inside the sleeping area, prompting immediate horror and chaos inside the home. Realizing the gravity of the snakebites, family members and neighbors gathered quickly and arranged for emergency transport, rushing Lalita and Amit to the nearest Rayagada Community Health Centre for urgent anti-venom treatment.
Emergency Referral to District Headquarters Hospital
At the Rayagada Community Health Centre, medical personnel initiated immediate emergency care to neutralize the venom. However, as the toxins rapidly spread through their systems, the medical condition of both mother and child deteriorated sharply. Recognizing the need for advanced life support and specialized care, doctors at the facility referred both patients to the District Headquarters Hospital located in Parlakhemundi. The family swiftly transported the critically ill mother and son to Parlakhemundi, but despite the efforts of attending doctors, both Lalita Raita and seven-year-old Amit Kumar Raita passed away during treatment.
Miraculous Survival of Father and Toddler Daughter
While the double casualty devastated the household, Ajay Kumar Raita and his one-and-a-half-year-old daughter miraculously escaped without any harm. The venomous snakes did not strike them, leaving both physically uninjured. However, the sudden and painful loss of his wife and young child has left the surviving father in deep grief. The unfortunate intrusion of venomous reptiles into a peaceful home has destroyed a family overnight, sparking concerns regarding snakebite risks during nighttime in rural habitations.
